Finance Apprentice – NELFT NHS Foundation Trust
About NELFT
North East London NHS Foundation Trust (NELFT) provides community and mental health services across north east London and parts of Essex.
Our Finance Directorate plays an important role in supporting the Trust to make effective use of its resources and deliver high-quality services to the communities we serve.
The Opportunity
We are recruiting two Finance Apprentices to join the NELFT Finance Directorate on a two-year development programme.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to start and develop a career in finance, combining practical workplace experience with study towards a recognised accounting/finance qualification.
Previous NHS or finance experience is not required. We are looking for people with the right attitude, enthusiasm and willingness to learn.
What You'll Do
During the programme, you will complete two 12-month placements across different areas of the Finance Directorate.
Placement opportunities may include:
- Finance Business Partnering
- Financial Accounts
- Costing, Reporting and Income
Depending on your placement, you will gain practical experience in areas such as:
- Supporting budget monitoring and financial reporting
- Working with financial and non-financial data
- Assisting with reconciliations and maintaining accurate financial records
- Using Excel and NHS finance systems to analyse and present information
- Supporting the preparation of financial information for colleagues and managers
- Responding to queries and working collaboratively with colleagues across Finance and the wider Trust
- Maintaining accurate records and handling financial information appropriately

You will receive support, training and guidance throughout the programme from experienced finance colleagues.
Apprenticeship & Development
Alongside your practical experience, you will work towards a recognised accounting/finance qualification.
The appropriate apprenticeship pathway will be determined based on your existing qualifications, experience and apprenticeship funding eligibility, and may be at AAT Level 2, Level 3 or Level 4.
Existing qualifications will therefore be considered as part of the apprenticeship eligibility assessment.
What We're Looking For
You do not need previous NHS or finance experience to apply.
We are particularly interested in applicants who can demonstrate:
- A genuine interest in developing a career in finance
- Confidence working with numbers and an interest in analysing information
- Good attention to detail and accuracy
- Effective communication and teamwork skills
- Good organisation and time-management skills
- Basic IT skills and a willingness to develop your Excel and finance-system knowledge
- A proactive approach to learning and personal development
- Professionalism and integrity when handling confidential information

Working Arrangements
This is a full-time, hybrid and place-based apprenticeship.
Apprentices will be expected to attend the workplace associated with their placement team, alongside remote working where appropriate and in line with team requirements.
As you rotate between placements during the two-year programme, your main workplace may change. NELFT services and Finance teams operate across locations in London and Essex.
