Summary
Unity Health is looking to appoint a Finance Apprentice to join our team and develop a career in finance. This is a newly designed role, you will have a clear focus on finance, income, bookkeeping and accounting support, while developing the skills and experience required to progress into an Assistant Accountant role.
Work
What you'll do at work
Finance and Bookkeeping
- Supporting the day-to-day financial administration of Unity Health.
- Maintaining accurate bookkeeping records.
- Using QuickBooks and other financial systems.
- Processing invoices, payments and remittances.
- Completing bank reconciliations.
- Investigating discrepancies and escalating issues where appropriate.
- Supporting month-end financial processes.
- Maintaining accurate and organised financial records.
- Supporting the preparation of financial information and reports.
Income and Claims
- Monitoring income due to Unity Health.
- Processing and submitting claims for services provided.
- Checking that claims have been received and paid.
- Monitoring outstanding income.
- Following up outstanding payments and escalating issues where appropriate.
- Maintaining accurate records of claims and payments.
- Supporting the administration of private income.
- Developing an understanding of Unity Health's different income streams.
As the apprentice develops, they will gain experience in:
- Preparing financial information for management review.
- Assisting with management reports.
- Reviewing income and expenditure information.
- Supporting budget monitoring.
- Identifying and investigating variances.
- Preparing spreadsheets and financial summaries.
- Supporting month-end processes.
- Developing an understanding of how financial information supports management decisions.

- Developing a strong working knowledge of QuickBooks/Xero.
- Investigating and learning about accounting software and digital bookkeeping tools.
- Supporting the effective use of financial systems.
- Identifying opportunities to improve financial processes.
- Helping to ensure financial information is recorded accurately and consistently.

What you'll learn
- Assist with the investigation of, and response to, financial information queries.
- Record and analyse financial data using the organisation’s standard tools and processes.
- Apply double entry bookkeeping and accounting standards to process financial documents, generate financial statements, and report financial information to users of accounts.
- Assist with production of accurate financial information for the preparation of accounts.
- Reconcile financial data, such as preparation of reconciliations or review of reconciliations.
- Investigate, resolve, or escalate transactional queries and errors within their remit as appropriate.
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders.
- Communicate financial information in a way that non-finance stakeholders can interpret and understand.
- Utilise digital skills to present key financial information using finance and accounting software and applications.
- Use software packages to assist with basic accounting tasks in line with cyber and data security requirements, using data securely and safely, including backing up data.
- Communicate using a range of approaches and media, with an understanding of the risks and benefits to the business of social media and other digital applications.
Training schedule
The apprenticeship includes regular training with the training organisation. At least 20% of your working hours will be spent training or studying.

Essential qualifications
- GCSE in: English (grade A*-C / 9-4)
- GCSE in: Maths (grade A*-C / 9-4)

Unity Health is a 6 Partner, 5 site GMS practice located in Buckinghamshire/Oxfordshire, with a growing patient list size of over 22K patients. Our five surgeries are located in Brill, Chinnor, Long Crendon, Princes Risborough and Thame. This role is intended to provide a pathway into a career in finance. As the apprentice progresses through their AAT qualification and develops their workplace experience, there will be opportunities to take on additional responsibility and develop towards a more substantive finance or Assistant Accountant position within Unity Health. The role will therefore develop with the individual, allowing responsibility to increase as their knowledge, confidence and qualification progress.
