Finance Assistant

12 Month FTC

Location: Edinburgh
(We believe in the power of in-person collaboration, and our hybrid model requires colleagues to be in the office a minimum of 40% of their time)

Salary: A competitive salary from £25,760 - £38,640 depending on the experience you can bring

As Finance Assistant you will undertake the day-to-day activity of Finance Operations, delivering a high-quality service to stakeholders and ensuring the integrity of the general ledger. You will prepare accounts to trial balance level, perform robust balance sheet and bank reconciliations, and complete insightful analysis to identify anomalies, resolve issues and strengthen financial controls.

You will partner with key stakeholders across Finance and the wider business to reduce financial risk and exposure in relation to key processes. You will communicate clearly, challenge constructively where needed, and take ownership to investigate, resolve and prevent accounting and process anomalies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver day-to-day finance operations activity to agreed quality standards and deadlines
  • Own and complete daily bank, control account and funding reconciliations; investigate breaks and ensure timely resolution
  • Process and reconcile Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable activity
  • Process receipts and payments, and prepare/review/authorise ledger journals in line with controls and delegated authorities
  • Prepare and process journals, including accruals and prepayments
  • Prepare accounts to trial balance level, including balance sheet substantiation and readiness for month-end reporting
  • Produce regular MI and reporting for Finance stakeholders, explaining movements and variances clearly
  • Produce cash books for trust-based clients and support associated control procedures

We’d love to hear from you if you have:

  • Strong reconciliation skills with the ability to investigate differences and resolve to root cause
  • Strong analytical skills (comfortable working with large data sets, identifying trends and explaining movements)
  • Clear communication and stakeholder management skills - able to explain finance topics to non-finance audiences
  • Good understanding of general ledger accounting
  • Understanding of month-end processes, including preparation of accounts to trial balance level
  • Strong PC skills, particularly Excel (e.g., pivot tables, lookups) to support reconciliation and analysis
  • Experience working in a finance operations or accounting environment - Financial Services preferred though not essential
  • Accounting qualification or working towards ACCA/CIMA is preferred but not essential
