Level 2 (AAT) Finance Assistant Apprenticeship - Newcastle High School for Girls Senior School
Role Overview
The Finance Apprentice plays an important role in supporting the smooth and effective day-to-day financial operation of the school while undertaking a structured programme of training and development towards a recognised finance qualification.
Working under the guidance of the Finance Manager and Finance Officer, and as part of the school’s finance team, they will develop practical knowledge and experience across a range of finance functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, record keeping, reporting, and financial administration. The role provides an opportunity to gain valuable workplace experience while learning about financial processes, controls, and systems within an educational environment.
Apprenticeship Details
- Hours: Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm
- Wage: Apprenticeship Wage, £8 per hour.
- Location: Newcastle High School for Girls Senior School
- Programme: Level 2 Finance Assistant (AAT)
- Duration: 16 months
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in supporting the smooth and effective day-to-day financial operation of the school through accurate and timely finance administration.
- Learn and apply finance processes, procedures, and controls in accordance with GDST policies and guidance.
- Provide a professional, responsive, and reliable service to staff, parents, and external contacts.
- Develop knowledge and understanding of school finance systems, financial procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Participate fully in apprenticeship training and development activities, applying learning within the workplace.
- Assist with day-to-day financial operations, including accounts payable and accounts receivable.
- Learn how to process invoices, payments, and receipts in line with established procedures.
- Support the preparation and maintenance of accurate financial records.
- Assist with routine finance administration to ensure transactions are processed accurately and within agreed timescales.
- Learn how to perform basic reconciliations and identify discrepancies for review by the Finance Officer or Finance Manager.
- Support the Finance Officer with the processing and reconciliation of routine financial transactions while developing an understanding of financial controls and procedures.
- Support the maintenance of financial data within finance and school systems.
- Learn and follow GDST financial policies, procedures, and controls.
- Assist the Finance Officer and Finance Manager with preparing financial documentation for audits and internal reviews as required.
- Support the maintenance of financial records in accordance with GDST requirements.
- Develop an understanding of financial compliance and the importance of accurate record-keeping.
- Assist with routine reporting and data gathering as directed by the Finance Officer or Finance Manager.

Essential
- A-levels or equivalent qualifications.
- Passed GCSE Maths and English.
- A genuine interest in finance, accounting, or business administration.
- Eligibility to undertake a finance apprenticeship programme.
- Experience of using Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.
- Experience working as part of a team, whether through employment, education, volunteering, or extracurricular activities.
