Finance Assistant – CFO & Advisory Support (Graduate / Entry Level)
Barley Grove | Hertford | Full-time | Up to £24,000
About us
Barley Grove is an ACCA accountancy/financial advisory practice based in Hertford. Our CFO & Advisory service provides fractional CFO support and strategic financial advice to a select group of our larger clients, helping them make better decisions, plan for growth and stay in control of their numbers.
The role
We're looking for a bright, numerate graduate or early-career professional to work directly alongside the Partner who leads this service. You'll support the preparation of financial reporting, forecasts and analysis for a small portfolio of client businesses, and help keep client work organised and on track.
It's a rare chance to see how senior finance leadership works across several businesses at once, early in your career. No formal accountancy qualification is needed, but you'll need a solid grounding and interest in finance, a sharp eye for detail and a genuine appetite to learn.
What you'll be doing
- Helping prepare monthly management accounts packs, board reports and KPI dashboards for clients
- Building and updating cash flow forecasts, budgets and budget-vs-actual variance analysis
- Supporting the Partner with financial models, scenario planning and ad hoc analysis
- Extracting and reconciling data from clients' accounting systems and checking it for accuracy
- Researching industry benchmarks, market data and other background for advisory projects
- Preparing clear, professional presentations and summaries of financial information
- Attending client meetings, taking notes and tracking actions and deadlines
- Acting as a point of contact for client finance teams on information requests
- Managing the Partner's diary and keeping client work organised and on schedule

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
