About The Role
Balfour Beatty's Finance Operations Automations team are recruiting for a junior developer, a role that involves building reports and automating digital processes. We are looking for applicants with an analytic mindset, who can identify problems and put forward solutions. In particular, we appreciate applicants with a strong background in finance operations, accounting services, or similar functions - an understanding of a range of existing processes and how they tick.
As a FA Developer, you will spend a lot of time working in Excel and should have a solid understanding of its core features. You will also be introduced to Power platform apps, including Power BI and Power Automate, and if needed will be trained in how to use these to automate the processes of other Operations teams, especially the movement of data and reporting that keeps the whole Finance function working. Opportunities are also available to advance your training through apprenticeships in Data and emerging technologies like AI for Business.
What you'll be doing
New Process Automations
- Use digital technology to automate office tasks within the Finance function. This is accomplished with the full suite of existent and emerging digital technologies, e.g. cloud computing, machine learning, digital robots and AI/copilot-enabled programming.
- Work with the Finance Transformation team, and the Finance Automations Product Manager, to ensure that automations are built to a common standard and that relevant documentation is filled out to a professional standard.
- Collaborate with end users to ensure that automations created for usage by other teams present a good user experience, including meaningful error messages and a comprehensible user guide.
- Where the responsibility for automated tasks needs to rest within the Automations team, ensure that timelines are clearly laid out and understood.
Automation Maintenance
- Support the business by providing support for existing automations built by the Automations team, including bug fixing, troubleshooting, configuration and re-training.
- Work with the Finance Automations Product Manager to carry out periodic reviews of previously created automations, updating and/or archiving tools appropriately when they are no longer fit for purpose.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
