  • Growth, Environment and Transport Services Department (1 FTE)

About the Role

As a Finance Business Partner, you will play a pivotal role in providing financial advice, developing and improving strategic financial insight, driving performance improvement, and supporting departments in delivering transformational change. This role offers the unique opportunity to influence key business decisions through collaborative working to ensure saving opportunities are optimised within a financially challenging environment. Although working in a Local Government environment would be beneficial, it is not essential for this position, and candidates who have worked in a similar role in a large, complex organisation will be considered favourably.

  • CCAB-qualified accountant, or equivalent, with membership of the relevant professional body
  • Experience of ensuring the integrity of financial information and resolving financial problems, particularly those relating to efficiency, by developing sound and workable solutions.
  • Experience of developing effective working relationships with senior and operational managers, other finance professionals and cross-functional teams to ensure that business and financial objectives are achieved for the Council and its partners.
  • Experience of communicating technical financial information clearly and accessibly to non-finance specialists, both in writing and face to face.
  • Experience of identifying and supporting improvements within a finance function, including involvement in finance or business projects and an understanding of project management principles.
  • A good understanding of the different areas of finance, including finance best practice, reporting, forecasting, budgeting and financial analysis techniques, together with business and commercial awareness.
  • Knowledge of developments in the services supported and experience of working within a political environment, including an understanding of how technology can improve management information and working practices.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
