RESPONSIBILITIES
What you’ll be doing on the Financial Reporting Development Programme
Over three years, you'll build the skills, experience and professional qualifications needed to develop a successful career in financial reporting.
As you progress through the programme, you'll gain exposure to different areas of Financial Reporting, developing the technical expertise, analytical thinking and commercial awareness needed to support a large and complex organisation.
Year one
Your first year is focused on building strong foundations.
You'll develop an understanding of accounting principles, financial reporting and financial controls while supporting the production, analysis and reconciliation of financial information. Working alongside experienced colleagues, you'll learn how accurate financial reporting supports decision-making, regulatory requirements and the successful running of the Society.
You'll also identify opportunities to improve processes and work collaboratively with colleagues to make reporting activities more efficient and effective.
Year two
As your confidence and experience grow, you'll move into a new team and begin taking ownership of more complex work.
You'll play a bigger role in producing financial analysis, supporting reporting activities and helping deliver key financial outputs. As your technical knowledge develops, you'll contribute more actively to understanding, explaining and communicating financial information.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
Start with a chat, not a search bar
Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits
No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
This is the point where you'll move beyond producing reports to helping interpret the story behind the numbers and understanding how financial reporting supports the wider business.
Year three
In your final year, you'll build expertise in more complex areas of Financial Reporting and take on greater responsibility.
You'll gain exposure to specialist areas such as treasury reporting, regulatory reporting or Annual Report & Accounts disclosures, working on activity that supports external reporting and stakeholder communications.
You'll broaden your technical knowledge, strengthen your stakeholder management skills and continue developing the confidence to work with colleagues across the organisation. By this stage, you'll be contributing valuable insight while helping deliver important financial reporting obligations for Nationwide.
Alongside your role, you'll study towards the ACA qualification, building recognised professional expertise alongside practical workplace experience.
You'll also gain access to a bespoke three-year learning journey designed to develop core business skills that complement your technical development. Throughout the programme, you'll build a network of peers from across the organisation, learning alongside other early careers colleagues and sharing experiences along the way.
This isn't a programme spent watching from the sidelines. From day one, you'll contribute to meaningful work, build valuable professional skills and gain experience across multiple areas of Financial Reporting.
Successful completion of the programme, together with your ACA qualification, will position you well for future opportunities within Nationwide's Finance teams, helping you take the next step in your professional career.
