Use your finance expertise to make a difference with Berkshire Lowland Search & Rescue. As our volunteer Finance Lead, you’ll oversee financial reporting, budgeting and planning, helping ensure our lifesaving search teams have the resources they need to respond when called upon.
What difference will you make?
Strong financial management is essential to ensuring Berkshire Lowland Search & Rescue (BLSAR) can continue to respond when vulnerable people go missing.
As a volunteer-run charity, we rely on fundraising and donations to fund the specialist equipment, vehicles, training and operational resources our Search Technicians need. Our Finance Lead will play an important role in making sure those funds are managed effectively and responsibly.
By providing accurate financial reporting, budgeting and forecasting, you’ll give our Trustees and Leadership Team a clear understanding of our financial position and help them make informed decisions about where our resources can have the greatest impact.
You’ll also help us plan for the future. Whether we’re considering investment in new equipment, maintaining our vehicles, delivering training or developing the organisation, having strong financial information and processes allows us to make sustainable decisions with confidence.
Your expertise will also support our fundraising activity by helping us demonstrate that donations and grants are managed appropriately and ensuring restricted funding is accurately monitored.
As BLSAR continues to develop, you’ll have the opportunity to improve our financial processes, controls and reporting, leaving a lasting impact on how the charity operates.
Ultimately, your contribution behind the scenes helps make our work on the ground possible. Effective financial management means our volunteers can remain trained, equipped and ready to respond when the police need our help to search for a high-risk vulnerable missing person.
What are we looking for?
We’re looking for an experienced and dependable finance professional who would like to use their skills to support a meaningful local cause.
Our ideal Finance Lead will have experience in finance, accounting, bookkeeping or financial management, with a good understanding of budgets, financial reporting and maintaining accurate financial records. You don’t necessarily need to have worked within a charity before – we’re particularly interested in the transferable skills and experience you can bring.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

You’ll ideally have
- Strong finance or accounting experience, ideally gained in a role with responsibility for financial reporting, budgeting or forecasting.
- Confidence interpreting financial information and providing clear, practical advice to others.
- Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining accurate records.
- Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage your own workload.
- Confidence using spreadsheets, accounting software and other digital systems.
- The ability to communicate financial information clearly to people who may not have a finance background.
- A collaborative approach and confidence working with Trustees, senior volunteers and colleagues across the organisation.
- High levels of integrity, discretion and professionalism.
- A proactive mindset and willingness to identify opportunities to improve financial processes and ways of working.
Experience within a charity, voluntary or not-for-profit organisation would be beneficial, particularly an understanding of areas such as restricted funds, donations, grants or charity reporting, but this is not essential.
A professional accounting or finance qualification would also be advantageous, although we’re equally interested in hearing from people with strong relevant experience.
As BLSAR is entirely volunteer-led, it’s important that you’re comfortable working independently, taking ownership of your area and collaborating with people who are giving their time alongside other work and personal commitments.
Most importantly, we’re looking for someone who is reliable, approachable and passionate about using their professional skills to make a difference.
