Finance Manager
London (2 days in office, 1 from home) | 3 days per week | Reporting to the Directors.
This is the whole finance function for a search firm running across London and Miami. Management accounts, cash, payroll, invoicing, two entities in two currencies, and a direct line to the Directors.
There is no financial controller above you and no team beneath you. You set the timetable, you own the controls, and you decide what the leadership team hears and when. If you have run a function before, you already know whether that appeals.
Who we are
Thurn Partners is a specialist search and advisory firm working across the alternative investment ecosystem. Hedge funds, proprietary trading firms, asset managers. We place investment, research and technology professionals into roles where the hiring decision moves the P&L.
We are small, profitable, and having our best year. We opened in Miami this year and the US business is early but growing. Long sales cycles, high value placements, lumpy revenue, and a rebate structure that makes revenue recognition a real question rather than a formality. It is a more interesting set of numbers than the headcount suggests.
What you will own
- The month. Management accounts end to end, on a timetable you set. Balance sheet reconciliations, P&L, and commentary that the Directors can take straight into a leadership meeting. We want your read on what moved and why, not a pack that leaves us to work it out.
- Cash and working capital. Rolling cash flow forecasting and short term liquidity. Fees are large and cycles are long, so the gap between winning work and being paid for it is where most of the interest sits. Debtor days, collection risk, and the call on which clients are worth the working capital they consume.
- Payroll and commission. Payroll runs through HiBob and JustWorks. Consultant commission runs through Konquest, syncing from our CRM. The scheme has enough moving parts that it rewards someone who understands it properly rather than administering it.
- Two entities. UK and US, different fee structures, separate banking, intercompany movements and FX between them. Consolidated performance on demand rather than on notice.
- The systems. Xero and Dext operationally.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

The commercial half of the job
Reporting the past accurately is essential. But the value is in telling us where we make money and where we do not.
- Revenue by desk, by consultant, by market, by geography. NFI per head. What the pipeline says against what the forecast says, and why those disagree. What a hire in Miami costs before they bill anything. Which parts of the US expansion are working and which are being carried.
You will work directly with the Directors and be in the room when decisions get made about hiring, expansion and cost. We want the version where you tell us the numbers do not support something, not the version where you present the analysis and let us reach our own conclusion.
How we work
The leadership team is small and one of the Directors is in Miami, so finance runs on trust rather than oversight. Decisions get made quickly and you will have real latitude over how the function operates.
- We are direct with each other. If a forecast does not hold up or a desk is not paying for itself, we would rather have that conversation than a diplomatic version of it. That runs both ways: you will get straight answers about where the business actually is.
- We are also happy to hear things early and unfinished. A view on Tuesday is more useful to us than a complete answer the following week.
