Finance Manager

Reports To: Managing Director

Direct Reports: Costing Manager, Finance Assistant

Job Purpose

The Finance Manager is responsible for overseeing the financial operations of the business, ensuring accurate financial reporting, effective cash flow management, budgeting, payroll oversight, and strategic financial planning. The role will support the Managing Director by providing financial insight to aid business decision-making and ensuring robust financial controls are maintained. The Finance Manager will also oversee the costing function to ensure accurate product and project costing, supporting profitability and operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management & Reporting

  • Prepare monthly management accounts, financial reports, and variance analyses.
  • Produce annual budgets and periodic forecasts.
  • Monitor financial performance and provide recommendations to improve profitability and efficiency.
  • Ensure compliance with all statutory, tax, and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage year-end accounts and liaise with external accountants and auditors.
  • Maintain and improve financial controls and processes.

VAT Returns

Cash Flow & Treasury

  • Monitor and manage company cash flow.
  • Prepare cash flow forecasts and identify potential risks.
  • Oversee banking relationships and financing arrangements.
  • Authorise payments and manage working capital effectively.

Payroll Oversight

  • Oversee payroll processing to ensure employees are paid accurately and on time.
  • Ensure compliance with payroll legislation, pensions, HMRC requirements, and benefits administration.
  • Review payroll reports and resolve any discrepancies.

Costing & Margin Management

  • Oversee the Costing Manager and costing processes across the business.
  • Ensure accurate costing of products, services, and projects.
  • Analyse labour, material, and overhead costs to identify opportunities for improved margins.
  • Work closely with operational teams to monitor cost performance and profitability.
  • Develop and maintain costing models and reporting tools.
  • Support pricing decisions through detailed financial analysis.

Team Leadership

  • Manage, mentor, and develop the Costing Manager and Finance Assistant.
  • Conduct performance reviews and establish development plans.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and teamwork.

Strategic Support

  • Provide financial analysis and business insight to support strategic decisions.
  • Evaluate investment opportunities and business improvement initiatives.
  • Support business growth through financial planning and risk assessment.
  • Participate in senior management meetings and contribute to company strategy.

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications & Experience

  • Professional accounting qualification (ACCA, CIMA, ACA or equivalent) or significant relevant experience.
  • Proven experience in a Finance Manager or senior finance role.
  • Strong management accounting and financial reporting experience.
  • Experience overseeing payroll functions.
  • Experience in costing, margin analysis, and profitability reporting.
  • Strong Excel and financial systems skills.
