Role Overview

Working closely with the Directors to support vital financial decisions for the success of the Company. This role is central to ASL's ongoing finance transformation and takes on full day-to-day leadership of the finance function, including line management of the existing team.

Responsibilities & Scope of Work

Core Finance Operations

  • Using Sage 50 Cloud, manage day-to-day entry of sales and purchase invoices, bank payments, receipts and reconciliations, credit card payments and reconciliations
  • Review and sign off VAT returns and nominal journals, including month-end and year-end close
  • Managing foreign exchange across Sterling, US Dollar and Euro accounts
  • Credit control, including oversight of the automated debtor management process
  • Using the bespoke database to ensure supplier invoices match purchase orders
  • Supplier payment scheduling, including management of the move to standardised 45-day payment terms
  • Managing the Company insurance portfolio
  • Management of payroll
  • Managing intercompany processes, including transactions, balances and reconciliations between UK and India entities, and adherence to the transfer pricing arrangement

Day to day processing sits primarily with the Finance Co-ordinator and Finance Assistant, with the Finance Manager providing oversight, review and sign off. The Finance Manager is expected to step into hands-on processing directly when team capacity requires it, including during absence, peak workload, or transition periods

Balance Sheet Control

  • Ownership of balance sheet reconciliations across all nominal codes, including prepayments, accruals, WIP and debtor/creditor control accounts
  • Ensuring all reconciliations are maintained monthly and signed off as part of month-end close
  • Investigating and clearing reconciliation variances on a timely basis, including the current WIP reconciliation variance

Cashflow Forecasting & Stock Management

  • Cash flow forecasting (Excel) to allow effective management of Sterling, US Dollar and Euro bank accounts, and to accurately plan receipt and payment of funds throughout each financial year in support of contract completion and tight deadlines
  • Ownership of stock and WIP valuation, including maintaining the stock valuation policy on an ongoing basis
  • Working with warehouse and operational teams to keep stock lines accurately valued and outstanding WIP cleared down each period

Reporting & Governance

  • Producing monthly management accounts for Director review
  • Reviewing the quarterly Management Information pack for the bank, demonstrating adherence to compliance covenants
  • Leading the annual budget process: nominal-level cost drill-down, org-chart-based budgeting, Capex, and departmental P&L reporting by ledger code and cost driver
  • Supporting the transition to a January-December year end from 2028

Team Management

  • People leadership is a core, not a peripheral part of this role.
  • Setting, monitoring and reporting Finance KPIs and quarterly Smart Goals for the UK and India finance teams
  • Running regular 1:1s with the team to monitor performance against KPIs
  • Conducting 6-monthly appraisals of team members
  • Maintaining clear access controls and confidentiality standards across the team, particularly around payroll and sensitive financial data
  • Regular meetings with the India office (Microsoft Teams) and the UK finance team in person

System & Liaison

  • Identifying a finance system suitable for the Company's growth plans, and leading its evaluation and implementation alongside the Finance Director
  • Liaison with the Company's accountants throughout the year, ensuring accounts are complete and correct before submission for preparation of final accounts

Requirements

  • Good working knowledge of Sage 50, Excel, Microsoft Office & Teams
  • Experience evaluating and implementing finance systems to support a growing business
  • Demonstrable experience of implementing automations and progressing from and eliminating redundant processes
  • Strong cash flow forecasting skills and comfort managing multi-currency accounts
  • Experience with stock and WIP valuation in an operational or project-based business
  • Experience managing balance sheet reconciliations and intercompany processes, ideally across multiple entities or jurisdictions
  • Diligent, hard-working person with excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to work under pressure and identify suitable alternative ways of working
  • Proven people management experience, ideally leading a small finance team
  • Proven experience of performance management
  • Previous experience in a Finance Manager role
  • Newly qualified CIMA, ACCA or ACA qualification, or QBE with strong relevant experience.
