I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

What we're looking for
Be hands-on, but think like a builder
You will take ownership of accounting, reporting, cash, controls, compliance, revenue, invoicing and complex reconciliations. But we do not want someone who simply administers these processes. We want someone who asks why they exist, how they can be improved, and where technology can remove friction, errors and unnecessary work.
Use AI to scale
This role sits at the leading edge of how finance is changing. You should be genuinely comfortable with large datasets, systems, automation and AI. You will help build a finance function that becomes more scalable as the company grows, rather than simply adding more headcount every time transaction volumes increase. The goal is simple: automate the routine, surface the exceptions and focus human attention where judgement matters.
Know when to be risk-on and risk-off
Good finance is not just about control. It is about judgement. You need to know when precision matters, when speed matters, when to challenge, when to protect the downside and when to enable the business to move faster. You should be able to work with complexity without creating complexity.

Think like a scientist
You are likely to be ACA, ACCA or CIMA qualified with around 4–7 years PQE and meaningful in-house experience. We are particularly interested in people with a strong analytical or quantitative background — mathematics, engineering, science, economics, computer science or similar — who naturally approach problems through logic, evidence and first principles.
You probably don’t think like everyone else
You may be the person who questions why something is done a certain way. You may spot patterns others miss. You may have strong conviction when you believe there is a better answer. That is a positive here. What matters is that you combine independent thinking with low ego, good judgement and the ability to work exceptionally well with others around a common goal.
Own the outcome
You will work directly with the founders and closely with Operations, with real freedom to implement, improve and challenge. For the right person, this is a chance to do far more than run finance. It is an opportunity to build the function, drive performance, influence how the company scales and grow with the business. Our ambition is to help build the future of how food brands and consumers intersect.
Why LKN?
- Work with award-winning brands and game-changing partners to push the boundaries of what’s possible in food.
- Be part of a company driving real change for partners, customers, and the industry.
- Enjoy incredible food, exciting challenges, and the chance to lead a transformative journey from the ground up. If you think like a scientist, operate like an entrepreneur and happen to be a great accountant, we would like to meet you.
