It also delivers clear profitability analysis and dependable financial information, while supporting business partners and the forecasting process with accurate actuals, assumptions and insight.
The role has line-management responsibility for two qualified Financial Accountants: one responsible for capital and fixed assets, and one responsible for inventory, IFRS 16 and logistics accounting.
What you will be doing:

- Prepare and review management accounts, delivering results to timetable with clear explanations of material movements.
- Own relevant balance-sheet reconciliations, resolve reconciling items promptly and maintain clear evidence of review.
- Perform and control margin, supplier income, waste, shrink, discount and inventory-related calculations, reconciliations and true-ups.
- Maintain a robust control framework, documented processes and an effective audit trail; identify control gaps and implement corrective action.
- Ensure appropriate accounting treatment and consistent application of Finance policies, escalating significant risks or judgements.
- Support year-end reporting, external audit and internal assurance requests.
Reporting and profitability analysis
- Produce complete, reconciled P&Ls by partnership, format and store, linking sales, margin, waste, labour and operating costs.
- Analyse actual performance against prior year and forecast, explaining key drivers, unusual items, risks and opportunities.
- Provide accurate reporting and concise commentary for M&S, Costa, wholesale and other partnership arrangements.
- Investigate store or format-level performance queries and ensure conclusions are supported by reliable financial data.
- Improve the consistency, transparency and usability of partnership reporting.
Partnership accounting and data integrity
- Own M&S and Costa month-end accounting, including reconciliations, charges, waste reporting and commentary.
- Reconcile financial results to relevant till, sales, inventory, operational and finance systems.
- Work with process owners to resolve data breaks and prevent recurrence across sales, cash, margin, waste and inventory.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
