Finance & Operations Manager
Part Time (22.5 hours per week)
Location: Taunton, Somerset (Hybrid working considered)
Reports to: Operations Director
About Somerset Counselling Centre
Somerset Counselling Centre (SCC) is a growing and ambitious charity providing professional counselling services across Somerset. We support adults, children and young people, couples, and survivors of domestic abuse to access high quality counselling regardless of their financial circumstances.
As we enter an exciting period of growth, including expansion into new locations, the development of specialist services and increasing investment in digital infrastructure, we are seeking an experienced Finance & Operations Manager to help strengthen our financial management and organisational performance.
The Opportunity
We are looking for a commercially minded and highly organised finance professional who can take ownership of budgeting, management accounts, financial reporting and operational performance across the charity.
Working closely with the Operations Director, Finance Officer and Trustees, you will play a key role in helping SCC understand its financial position, forecast future performance, identify opportunities and support strategic decision making.
While some operational oversight remains part of the role, the successful candidate will spend the majority of their time focused on finance, planning, reporting and organisational improvement.
This role would suit someone looking for a meaningful part-time position where their financial expertise can directly help a local charity grow and support more people.

The Finance & Operations Manager will take ownership of the charity's day-to-day financial administration, ensuring accurate and timely processing of income and expenditure.
Responsibilities include:
- Managing the end-to-end client invoicing process, ensuring invoices are raised accurately and promptly.
- Monitoring client accounts and outstanding balances.
- Overseeing debt management processes, payment plans and debt reporting.
- Producing regular reports on debtor performance and income recovery.
- Processing and approving invoices from suppliers and contractors.
- Managing the payment process for associate counsellors, supervisors and other sessional workers.
- Maintaining accurate records of counsellor sessions, fees payable and associated costs.
- Reconciling income and expenditure records with the accounting system.
- Ensuring all financial transactions are appropriately authorised in accordance with SCC policies and delegated authorities.
- Maintaining strong financial controls and audit trails across all income and expenditure activities.
- Supporting grant claim submissions and funder financial reporting requirements.
Financial Management and Analysis
- Lead the monthly management accounts process.
- Prepare and present monthly financial reports for the Senior Leadership Team and Trustees.
- Produce meaningful commentary explaining variances against budget.
- Develop and maintain annual budgets.
- Support long-term financial forecasting and scenario planning.
- Monitor organisational cash flow and financial performance.
- Maintain financial controls and processes.
- Oversee payroll preparation and financial administration.
- Analyse service performance and profitability across programmes.
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and financial sustainability.
- Support the development of new services through financial modelling and forecasting.

Operational Leadership
- Line manage administrative and service delivery staff.
- Ensure effective administration systems are in place.
- Support the implementation of new systems and business improvements.
- Work collaboratively with the Clinical Director and Operations Director to ensure smooth day-to-day operations.
Governance and Compliance
- Support the preparation of annual budgets and statutory accounts.
- Assist with audit and independent examination processes.
- Maintain financial policies and procedures.
- Support compliance with Charity Commission requirements and relevant legislation.
- Assist Trustees with financial information and decision making.
What We're Looking For
Essential
- Previous experience preparing management accounts.
- Strong budgeting and forecasting experience.
- Excellent analytical and financial reporting skills.
- Advanced Excel skills.
- Experience with accounting systems such as Sage.
- Ability to interpret financial information and explain it to non-finance colleagues.
- Excellent organisational and planning skills.
- Strong written communication skills.
- Experience managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Desirable
- Charity sector experience.
- AAT, CIMA, ACCA, ACA or equivalent qualification.
- Experience supporting Boards or Trustees.
- Experience managing grant-funded budgets.
- Knowledge of payroll processes.
- Experience implementing systems or process improvements.
