Finance Risk & Controls Assurance Specialist

Location: Glasgow

Contract: 12-Month PAYE Contract (Maternity Cover)

Working Pattern: Hybrid, 3 days per week in the office

Start Date: November (subject to onboarding)

The Opportunity

Our client is seeking an experienced Finance Risk & Controls Assurance Specialist to join its Finance Risk team in Glasgow on a 12-month maternity cover contract. This role sits within a specialist Finance Risk function responsible for overseeing Non-Financial Risk and Controls across the Finance division. Working across multiple Finance disciplines, you will play a key role in assessing the effectiveness of controls, providing independent challenge, analysing risk and controls data, and supporting the ongoing enhancement of the Finance control environment. This is a highly visible position offering broad stakeholder exposure and the opportunity to contribute to key control improvement initiatives within a globally recognised financial institution.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and challenge risk and control information from a quality assurance and governance perspective.
  • Assess the design and effectiveness of controls across Finance functions.
  • Analyse control failures and determine whether issues relate to control design, execution, oversight or process gaps.
  • Perform detailed data analysis to identify trends, themes, emerging risks and opportunities for improvement.
  • Support the delivery of Non-Financial Risk and Control activities across the Finance division.
  • Produce management information, dashboards, reporting packs and presentations for senior stakeholders.
  • Monitor remediation activities and track progress against agreed actions.
  • Partner with Finance Risk Leads and business stakeholders to strengthen controls and governance processes.
  • Contribute to control enhancement and transformation initiatives as the Finance control environment continues to evolve.
  • Support governance activities and provide meaningful insight to assist decision-making.

About You

You will bring experience from a Risk & Controls, Operational Risk, Controls Assurance, Internal Audit or Governance environment and be comfortable operating in a role that combines analysis, assurance, stakeholder management and constructive challenge. You will have strong attention to detail, enjoy working with data and be able to communicate findings effectively to a range of stakeholders.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Experience within Risk & Controls, Controls Assurance, Operational Risk, Internal Audit or a similar governance-focused environment.
  • Strong understanding of risk and control frameworks.
  • Experience reviewing, assessing or testing controls.
  • Advanced Excel skills and confidence analysing large datasets.
  • Ability to identify trends, themes and root causes from complex information.
  • Experience producing management reporting, governance packs or stakeholder presentations.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities.
  • Ability to provide constructive challenge and influence positive outcomes.

Desirable Experience

  • Banking or Financial Services experience.
  • Exposure to Non-Financial Risk frameworks.
  • Experience supporting governance forums and senior stakeholder discussions.
  • Previous involvement in risk, controls or assurance transformation initiatives.
  • Experience working within a highly regulated environment.
