The role has two core responsibilities: leading statutory reporting and audit activities, and overseeing the finance implementation of new schemes and transformation initiatives. The postholder ensures accounting treatments, controls, systems, reporting structures and operating models are designed and embedded effectively, bridging scheme design, finance delivery and ongoing reporting requirements.
Key Responsibilities

- Lead Finance through discovery and design phases, ensuring accounting, reporting, systems, controls and operational needs are identified early. Work with Government stakeholders, Policy teams and Finance colleagues to shape deliverable, financially robust scheme designs.
- Lead Finance within implementation programmes, overseeing Finance workstreams and translating accounting treatments into practical Finance solutions in collaboration with the Finance Settlements Manager, Technical Accounting Partner and Settlement Change Accountant.
- Lead the design and configuration of Sage X3 (or successor systems), including chart of accounts, reporting hierarchies, journal structures, interfaces and reporting outputs, and ensure testing, reconciliation and governance are complete before go-live.
- Own the Finance reporting and control framework for new schemes, including reconciliations, period-end processes, disclosures and reporting requirements.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
