Finance Team Leader
Location: Luton – agile working available
Salary: £33,000–£35,000 per annum, depending on experience
Contract: Permanent
Hours: 37 hours per week, Monday to Friday
The Opportunity
We are recruiting on behalf of a specialist Supported Living Services provider that helps people live independently and achieve positive outcomes. As the organisation continues to grow, it is looking for an experienced Finance Team Leader to oversee the day-to-day operations of its transactional finance function.
Reporting to the Financial Controller and working closely with the Management Accountant, you will manage activities across purchase ledger, sales ledger, banking, reconciliations and cash management.
This is a hands-on role combining operational finance responsibilities with team leadership. You will help manage workloads, support colleagues, maintain strong financial controls and identify opportunities to improve systems and processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the day-to-day activities of the Finance Team, providing guidance, support and performance oversight.
- Maintain accurate cashbooks and complete monthly bank reconciliations across multiple accounts.
- Process journals and help maintain the integrity of the general ledger.
- Oversee sales ledger activities, ensuring invoices are processed accurately and customer queries are resolved promptly.
- Manage purchase ledger processes, including supplier invoices and payment runs.
- Monitor income, banking transactions and financial reconciliations.
- Support the maintenance of the Fixed Asset Register.
- Respond to finance-related queries from colleagues across the organisation.
- Ensure compliance with financial procedures, internal controls and organisational policies.
- Support the preparation of financial reports and documentation for senior management and external stakeholders.
- Identify and implement improvements to financial systems, processes and controls.
- Contribute to audit preparation and year-end activities.

About You
You will be an experienced finance professional with strong transactional finance knowledge and the confidence to supervise processes and support a busy team.
You will be organised, accurate and comfortable balancing your own workload with responsibility for ensuring the wider team meets its deadlines. You will lead by example, communicate effectively and take a proactive, solution-focused approach to improving finance operations.
Essential Experience and Skills
- At least two years’ experience within a busy finance or accounting function.
- Experience supervising finance processes or supporting the work of a finance team.
- Strong practical experience of bank reconciliations, journals, purchase ledger and sales ledger.
- Experience using accounting software and Microsoft Office.
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills.
- Excellent reconciliation and analytical abilities.
- A high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- The ability to manage competing priorities and work effectively under pressure.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- The ability to build positive working relationships across an organisation.
- A professional and reliable approach, with a commitment to confidentiality.
- GCSEs or equivalent qualifications in English and Mathematics.
- Qualified by experience within a finance environment.

Desirable Experience
- AAT qualified or studying towards ACCA, CIMA or an equivalent accounting qualification.
- Experience within Supported Living, Health and Social Care or the not-for-profit sector.
- Experience supporting external audits and financial reporting.
- Experience identifying and implementing process improvements.
