Job title: Financial Accountant
Based at: Finance Centre, Cheltenham Racecourse
Contract type: 6-month contract
Hours: 37.5 hours per week (Monday – Friday)
About the role
We have a fantastic opportunity for a Financial Accountant to join our team at the Finance Centre in Cheltenham to provide dedicated finance support to resolve VAT, revenue allocation and balance sheet reconciliation queries. The initial focus will be on validating existing transactions, correcting accounting treatment where required, and establishing robust reconciliations for several control accounts, including aged debtors, and VAT accounts.

About our team
At the Finance Centre, we’re here to support and help the teams across the Jockey Club. Helping our racecourses to deliver thrilling events daily. At the Finance Centre, we have four key teams – Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Credit Control and Finance Support. Our teams work smart and are not fazed by high transactional volumes – each month, we’re managing and processing thousands of transactions.
The Financial Accountant will
- Review sales transactions to confirm they have been raised correctly and allocated to the correct business unit.
- Investigate and resolve VAT, GL coding and transaction classification issues.
- Review and correct transactions where required, maintaining a clear audit trail of adjustments.
- Reconcile key balance sheet control accounts to source transaction records, including aged debtors and VAT accounts.
- Support month-end close activities and ensure key balance sheet reconciliations are complete, accurate and supported by complete documentation.
- Create and document the reconciliation processes, controls and supporting procedures.
About you
- Strong practical understanding of UK VAT, particularly output VAT and sales transactions.
- Strong experience of balance sheet control account reconciliations, including sales ledger/aged debtors.
- Comfortable investigating large transaction volumes and posting corrective journals.
- Strong Excel and data analysis skills
- Proactive, with excellent attention to detail and the ability to investigate and resolve issues independently.
