Job Opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity for a qualified ACA/ACCA/CIMA accountant to join a growing London AIM listed energy company operating across both conventional energy and geothermal renewable projects.

The role combines business partnering, financial analysis, and technical accounting, providing exposure to senior stakeholders across the Group. As the business executes its growth strategy, including potential M&A opportunities in oil and gas and the continued development of its geothermal portfolio, the successful candidate will play an important role in supporting decision-making and improving financial insight across the organisation. The role involves a combination of regular monthly responsibilities with ad hoc tasks and provides a good opportunity to develop a wide range of financial skills.

Monthly Responsibilities

  • Support to Budget Holders

    • Preparing departmental cost analysis and reporting and performing detailed variance analysis;
    • Providing quarterly reports to budget holders;
    • Preparing a detailed G&A forecast, which feeds into the Group budget & forecasts;
    • Managing month end for G&A cost centres;
    • Raising of new (corporate) AFEs, and approval of POs and G&A coding;
    • Developing the CoA, and analysis codes in the accounting system. Setting up new suppliers (corporate).

  • Business Partnering for the Geothermal Division

    • Responsible for accounting, forecasting, and reporting of geothermal costs to support this division;
    • Close liaison with geothermal team to understand projects and thereby to perform analysis and review of project costs against budget;
    • Review of geothermal cost forecasts for use in Group budget and forecasts;
    • Working closely with the Head of Financial Reporting to develop accounting policies for this growing business area. Ensure compliance with agreed policies, in particular, capitalisation treatment for large geothermal projects;
    • Analysis, posting and reconciliation of intercompany charges from other Group companies;
    • Raising of new AFEs, and approval of POs and coding;
    • Developing the CoA, and analysis codes in the accounting system. Setting up new suppliers (geothermal).
  • Assist FP&A Manager with Month End Process

  • Manage the Group’s Timewriting Process

    • Preparing analysis, reconciliation, and monthly review of Group timewriting;
    • Preparation of timewriting rate calculation;
    • Preparing timewriting forecast file for input into Group forecast.
  • Technical Accounting

    • Responsible for the Group’s hedging treatment for commodity and FX hedges including the monthly journal entries and other related reconciliations;
    • Responsible for the correct treatment of Group’s leases in line with IFRS16 including preparing the reconciliations/workings and journal entry on a bi-annual basis and preparing disclosures for the Group’s Annual Report;
    • Geothermal capitalisation policy.

Other Responsibilities

  • Providing financial support for anticipated growth in the business following a successful equity raise providing capital to execute a targeted M&A strategy, and as the business approaches the development phase on various geothermal projects. Work includes:

    • Improving finance processes and management reporting;
    • Simplifying and enhancing forecasting models;
    • Developing new financial models to support business decision-making.
  • Support the administration of the Group’s share incentive plan, including the issuance of shares, obtaining Board approval, and arranging the related RNS.

  • Assisting with other ad-hoc requests and Finance projects as required.

Key Competencies

  • Qualified ACCA/ACA preferably from a top 20 audit firm or qualified CIMA;
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships across finance and non-finance teams;
  • Self-starter capable of using initiative and ability to meet deadlines whilst managing competing priorities;
  • Flexible approach with a desire to take accountability for areas of responsibility and grow with the business as it executes its strategy;
  • Advanced Microsoft Office user – in particular advanced Excel skills, including financial modelling, data analysis, and reporting;
  • A team player who will work collaboratively with the Finance team and the wider business teams.

Note: At present, this role is a hybrid-working role, with at least two days each week in our London office or more regularly at certain times when working on particular projects or to enable collaboration with colleagues. This may change in the future as the company grows, although it would continue to be a hybrid working role.
