Financial Capability Advisor
Perennial has been helping people in horticulture for over 180 years. We are the UK’s only charity dedicated to helping everyone who works in horticulture, and their families.
The Financial Capability Advisor will provide a professional, comprehensive financial capability advice service across the horticultural community. The role supports people to manage their money more effectively through budgeting support, income maximisation, financial resilience work, practical coaching, and appropriate referrals. Advice will be delivered by telephone, email, digital channels, and face to face, including home and community visits where appropriate.
Duties and Responsibilities
Advice Giving
- Maintain an active caseload of service users, including people with complex needs, taking on and closing cases appropriately.
- Work independently to prioritise workload, manage deadlines, and deliver support through telephone, email, digital channels, and face-to-face appointments.
- Undertake initial assessments covering budgeting, income maximisation, financial resilience, and financial confidence.
- Develop person-centred, tailored plans that help service users understand their financial situation and make informed decisions.
- Provide guidance and coaching that enables service users to build the skills, knowledge, and behaviours needed to manage their finances sustainably.
- Deliver booked Helpline appointments, including advice on income maximisation and access to essential service social tariffs.
- Support the development and delivery of workshops, webinars, and training sessions that build financial capability across the horticultural community.
- Promote financial inclusion and early intervention, helping to prevent financial crisis and reduce reliance on crisis support.
- Identify when regulated debt advice is required and make appropriate referrals to specialist advice providers.
- Build and maintain effective relationships with external partners, including attending networking events and collaborating with organisations that support financial wellbeing.
- Travel across the UK as required, including to outreach locations within the horticultural community.

Administration
- Provide accurate data, statistics, and reports, and participate in meetings and supervision sessions as required.
- Work in line with organisational policies and procedures, including safeguarding, health and safety, confidentiality, data protection, and equality, diversity, and inclusion.

- Undertake any other duties consistent with the role as required by the line manager and Services Leadership Team.
Person Specification
Essential Criteria
- Experience of providing advice, guidance, coaching, or practical support to individuals, ideally including people with complex needs or financial challenges.
- Understanding of budgeting, income maximisation, financial resilience, and financial inclusion.
- Awareness of the boundaries between financial capability support and regulated debt advice.
- Understanding of safeguarding, confidentiality, data protection, and equality, diversity, and inclusion in service delivery.
- Strong assessment, case management, and record-keeping skills.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to adapt support to individual needs and preferences.
- Ability to work independently, prioritise workload, and meet deadlines.
- Confident using telephone, email, digital platforms, and face-to-face channels to deliver support.
- Ability to build constructive relationships with service users, colleagues, and external partners.
- Empathetic, non-judgemental, and person-centred approach.
- Committed to promoting financial inclusion and early intervention.
- Resilient, organised, and able to manage sensitive conversations professionally.
- Collaborative and committed to acting in the best interests of the charity.
- Competent using IT systems and digital tools to support day-to-day work.

- Knowledge of the horticultural community or experience supporting people working in self-employed, seasonal, or low-income roles.
- Experience delivering workshops, webinars, helpline appointments, or community outreach.
- Experience working with partner organisations to support financial wellbeing.
- Relevant training or qualification in advice, guidance, coaching, financial capability, welfare support, or a related field.

- Location: Home based / UK-wide travel as required
- Salary: £33,486
- Hours of work: 37.5 hours per week
- Pension: Perennial operates an auto-enrolment pension scheme and will match employee contributions up to the statutory amount. Details of the scheme will be available following a formal offer of employment.
- Holidays: 25 days per annum pro rata, plus bank holidays (with increases for long service)
- General: Sick Pay, Death in Service Benefit (3x salary). Perennial has a number of well-established, family-friendly policies, including ‘buying’ extra (unpaid) leave, time off for dependents, variations to normal working hours. Further details available on request. Company car/car benefit.
- General Considerations: All Perennial jobs are subject to a probationary period (6 months) and a periodic review.
- Smoking: In the interests of health and safety, Perennial operates a non-smoking policy on its premises and expects staff not to smoke in company vehicles.
