Referment is working with a fast-growing, VC-backed technology company to hire a Financial Controller to take ownership of its finance function as the business enters its next stage of growth.

This is a broad, hands-on role covering financial control, revenue, cash, compliance, treasury and reporting across an international SaaS business.

Working directly with the leadership team, you'll have significant autonomy to improve how finance operates, introduce new systems and automate processes as the company scales.

This isn't a maintenance role. The company is looking for someone who wants to build the finance function while running it.

The Role

You'll Be Responsible For

  • Owning the monthly close and producing accurate management accounts.
  • Maintaining balance sheet integrity, including accruals, prepayments and reconciliations.
  • Producing monthly investor reporting and supporting board reporting.
  • Reporting on SaaS metrics including ARR, revenue, cash, runway, unit economics and retention.
  • Owning invoicing, collections, aged debt and revenue recognition.
  • Improving and automating billing and revenue processes.
  • Managing financial reporting across UK and international entities.
  • Supporting statutory accounts, audit, tax and regulatory requirements.
  • Managing intercompany accounting, transfer pricing and foreign exchange exposure.
  • Running cash flow forecasting and supporting treasury decisions.
  • Managing relationships with external accountants, tax advisers and other finance partners.
  • Owning and improving the company's finance technology stack.
  • Using AI and automation to reduce manual work across reconciliations, reporting and finance operations.
  • Working directly with senior leadership on financial and commercial decisions.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Experience within a SaaS, subscription or VC-backed technology company would be particularly relevant, especially if you've worked with ARR, deferred revenue and recurring billing.

We're also particularly interested in people who are already using AI and automation within finance and can demonstrate processes they've improved or automated.

Exposure to US finance, regulated businesses, SQL, Python or low-code automation tools would be useful but isn't essential.

This could suit a Financial Controller, Senior Financial Controller, Head of Finance or Finance Manager looking for greater ownership within a high-growth technology company.
