Interim Finance Manager / Financial Controller
Nottingham | 6-month FTC | 3–4 days per week | Flexible hours
£75,000–£85,000 FTE
Eaton Syalon are supporting an established, owner-managed SME in Nottingham with the appointment of an experienced finance professional for an initial six-month period.
This is a hands-on assignment to support the existing finance team in bringing the accounting fully up to date, strengthen processes and controls, and leave behind a capable team with good quality, timely financial information. We are keen to engage someone for this with significant experience operating within owner-managed/SME settings.
There is an aged project to work through across the finance function, so initially there will be an element of unpicking, reconciling, and getting underneath the detail, alongside ensuring that business-as-usual accounting continues to run effectively.
Once on top of the immediate priorities, there is a real opportunity to look at how things are currently done and introduce pragmatic improvements and put in place sensible controls and ways of working that are appropriate for an owner-managed SME.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Just as importantly, our client would like someone who will work alongside the existing team and take them on the journey. Coaching, sharing knowledge, and helping people understand the 'why' behind improved processes will be an important part of the assignment, with the aim of handing the reins back to a confident team at the end of the contract.
We expect the role to include:
- Supporting month-end and management accounting alongside the existing team
- Working through historic/aged accounting matters and bringing information fully up to date
- Balance sheet reconciliations and ensuring the integrity of underlying financial information
- Reviewing and strengthening financial processes and controls
- Identifying gaps, inconsistencies, and areas where processes can be simplified or improved
- Supporting the production of accurate, timely management information
- Working closely with the owners and wider business where required
- Coaching and developing the small finance team, embedding improvements as you go
- Creating a sustainable handover so that the team can confidently maintain the improved processes once the assignment concludes
