Financial Controller
Location: Alfreton, Derbyshire
Salary: £75,000–£85,000
Contract Type: Full-time, Permanent
Working Pattern: Office-Based, 5 days per week
About the Role
We’re recruiting for a Financial Controller to join a successful and growing organisation based in Alfreton. This is a hands-on role within a small finance team, offering the opportunity to take ownership of the day-to-day financial operations of the business while working closely with the wider leadership team.
You’ll be responsible for preparing accurate management accounts, balance sheets and cash flow forecasts, as well as providing meaningful financial analysis to support business improvement and decision-making. You’ll also work closely with the Sales team, providing financial insight and support on margin-related queries.
As part of a small team of three, this is not a role where you’ll be purely focused on high-level financial reporting. You’ll need to be comfortable rolling your sleeves up and getting involved, including providing cover during holidays and supporting with wider day-to-day finance activities such as sales ledger when required.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Control
- Prepare accurate and timely monthly management accounts.
- Produce and maintain balance sheets and associated reconciliations.
- Prepare cash flow forecasts and monitor the financial position of the business.
- Ensure financial information is accurate, reliable and delivered within agreed deadlines.
- Support the wider finance team with day-to-day accounting activities.

Commercial Analysis & Business Support
- Provide financial analysis and insight to support business improvement and decision-making.
- Analyse financial performance and identify trends, opportunities and areas for improvement.
- Work closely with the Sales function on margin-related queries and provide commercial financial guidance.
- Support the leadership team with relevant financial information and analysis.
Hands-On Finance Support
- Work as part of a small finance team and contribute across a broad range of finance activities.
- Provide holiday cover across the team and pick up additional responsibilities when required.
- Support with areas such as sales ledger and other day-to-day finance operations.
- Take a proactive approach to resolving issues and improving financial processes.
Stakeholder Management
- Build strong working relationships with the senior leadership team and wider business.
- Communicate financial information clearly to both finance and non-finance stakeholders.
- Be confident challenging and influencing senior stakeholders where required.
Candidate Profile
Essential
- Fully qualified ACA or CIMA accountant.
- Strong experience across management accounts, balance sheets and cash flow forecasting.
- Commercially minded with the ability to analyse financial information and turn it into meaningful business insight.
- Comfortable working in a small finance team and taking a hands-on approach.
- Strong understanding of margins and financial performance.
- Confident working closely with senior stakeholders and challenging where appropriate.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proactive, adaptable and willing to get involved across the wider finance function.

Desirable
- Previous experience within manufacturing or distribution.
- Experience working with raw materials/products and understanding margins within a manufacturing environment.
- Experience supporting Sales teams with commercial or margin-related queries.
- Previous experience working within a small finance function.
