Virgate | Your Dynamic Accounts Team provides outsourced accountancy and bookkeeping services to ambitious SMEs across the UK, acting as a flexible alternative or complement to in-house finance teams. The team delivers day-to-day bookkeeping in Xero, secure staff and supplier payments, reliable payroll, and interactive monthly management reporting that offers clarity and timely insights. Qualified accountants, including chartered and certified management accountants, ensure full compliance with VAT returns, statutory accounts, and corporation tax. Founded in 2016, Virgate is a people-first, UK-based team supported by a global back-office hub, serving clients across sectors such as professional services, property, retail, manufacturing, and health & fitness. The company focuses on responsiveness, clear communication, and providing directors, managers, and investors with the right financial information in the right format.

Role Description

The Financial Controller is a full-time, on-site role based in Gloucester, responsible for overseeing the financial management and reporting activities for a portfolio of SME clients. This role includes:

  • Preparing and reviewing financial statements
  • Managing month-end and year-end close processes
  • Ensuring accurate financial reporting in line with relevant standards
  • Overseeing budgeting and forecasting

Day-to-day tasks include:

  • Supervising accounting operations
  • Maintaining robust internal controls
  • Liaising with clients on financial queries
  • Collaborating with the wider Virgate team to deliver timely and interactive management reports
  • Supporting compliance activities, such as reviewing VAT returns and statutory filings
  • Contributing to continuous improvement in processes and systems

Qualifications

  • Strong accounting expertise, including practical experience with Accounting and Financial Statements.
  • Proficiency in Finance and Financial Reporting, with a solid understanding of relevant regulations and standards.
  • Advanced Analytical Skills to interpret financial data, identify trends, and provide clear, actionable insights.
  • Professional accounting qualification (e.g., ACA, ACCA, CIMA) or equivalent experience in a financial controller or senior finance role.
  • Proven experience working with SMEs or in outsourced/managed finance services, ideally in a multi-client environment.
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail, with strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain financial information clearly to non-finance stakeholders.
  • Comfort with cloud-based accounting systems (e.g., Xero) and modern reporting tools; confidence in improving processes and controls.
  • Ability to work collaboratively on-site in Gloucester, building long-term relationships with colleagues and clients.
