Overview of the Role

Reporting directly to the Managing Director and forming part of the senior management team, this role will be responsible for the company's financial accounting, reporting, governance and control activities. This is a hands-on leadership position that combines strategic financial planning with day-to-day operational oversight. The successful candidate will manage a small finance team while driving continuous improvement across financial systems, processes and reporting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the finance function, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting across the business.
  • Prepare and present monthly management accounts, financial analysis and management reports.
  • Monitor cash flow performance, forecast future trends and provide strategic recommendations.
  • Support the development of long-term business plans and financial strategies.
  • Develop and maintain robust financial controls and risk management frameworks.
  • Identify and deliver cost reduction and efficiency improvement opportunities.
  • Manage budgeting and forecasting processes, including the preparation of annual budgets.
  • Oversee all tax compliance activities, including VAT, corporation tax and payroll-related obligations.
  • Lead the annual audit process and liaise with external auditors, tax advisers, banks and other professional stakeholders.
  • Ensure accounting policies and procedures comply with relevant accounting standards and legislation.
  • Manage payroll oversight, supplier payment approvals and general treasury activities.
  • Maintain and optimise accounting and asset management systems, driving automation and process improvements.
  • Oversee company insurances and utilities in line with group requirements.
  • Lead, coach and develop a small finance team while fostering strong collaboration across the wider business.
  • Provide financial insight and support to senior leadership to aid decision-making.
  • Stay abreast of changes in financial regulations and ensure ongoing compliance.
  • Champion a culture of continuous improvement, accuracy and operational excellence.
  • Promote adherence to health, safety, environmental and quality standards across all activities.

Background and Experience

  • Fully qualified accountant status (ICAS, ACCA or equivalent).
  • Degree qualification in Accounting, Finance or a related discipline.
  • Significant experience in a senior finance leadership role, ideally operating at senior management level.
  • Strong financial accounting, management reporting, budgeting and forecasting expertise.
  • Experience managing audits, tax compliance and statutory reporting requirements.
  • Proven ability to lead and develop finance teams.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret financial data and provide commercial recommendations.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.
  • Previous experience with Sage accounting software would be advantageous.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage competing priorities.
  • A collaborative, proactive and hands-on approach to leadership.
