Financial Controller

My client, a globally renowned business headquartered in Liverpool, are looking to hire a technically strong Financial Controller to lead their high calibre finance function.

This is an exceptional opportunity for you to play a pivotal role in shaping the financial operations of a business, operating across multiple locations and business units.

You will be responsible for managing a large finance team, ensuring robust financial governance, and delivering timely, accurate information to senior stakeholders.

What you'll do:

  • Take full ownership of month-end and year-end processes, ensuring all deadlines are met and financial information is delivered accurately across multiple business units.
  • Complete comprehensive balance sheet reporting and prepare ad hoc key performance indicators for various branches within the group.
  • Maintain strong financial governance by providing constructive challenge to stakeholders and resolving issues promptly in line with best practice standards.
  • Oversee the preparation of detailed senior management reports as well as weekly flash forecasts to inform strategic decision-making.
  • Manage the budgeting process for assigned brands, including preparation and review of budget information in collaboration with relevant teams.
  • Develop service levels by nurturing key stakeholder relationships at branch level and supporting ongoing improvements in service delivery.
  • Ensure compliance with HMRC requirements including VAT returns, corporation tax support, and other statutory obligations.
  • Oversee foreign exchange purchasing activities for the UK business, ensuring effective risk management and cost control.
  • Act as the primary contact for both internal and external auditors, facilitating successful completion of audits for managed divisions.
  • Serve as control owner for several SOX controls executed at the Shared Service Centre, guaranteeing timely and accurate execution.

What you bring:

  • Qualified accountant status (ACA/ACCA preferred) with some years PQE experience managing a finance team in a similar environment.
  • Demonstrated experience managing multi-location businesses with complex structures and varied stakeholder groups over at least five years in financial management roles.
  • Proven track record of people management within finance teams-including coaching junior staff members-and supporting their professional growth through considerate leadership.
  • Expertise in handling large volumes of data using advanced Excel skills alongside other relevant systems or tools required for high-quality financial analysis.
  • Experience working within wholesale or FMCG environments would be advantageous but is not essential for success.
  • Ability to manage change effectively by assisting with transformation projects or process improvements across finance functions.
  • Strong communication skills enabling you to articulate technical concepts clearly to colleagues from non-financial backgrounds while building trust-based relationships.
  • Continuous improvement mindset coupled with curiosity about emerging technologies such as AI that can enhance business processes or reporting capabilities.
  • Excellent organisational abilities allowing you to prioritise competing demands while maintaining accuracy under pressure during peak periods such as month-end or year-end close.
