Role Description
We are working with a fast-growing and ambitious construction business that is looking to appoint an experienced Financial Controller to take ownership of its financial control and reporting function. This is a key appointment within the business and an excellent opportunity for a technically strong, commercially minded finance professional to have genuine influence over the continued development of the organisation. The successful candidate will take responsibility for the integrity and delivery of the group's financial reporting, while also working closely with senior management and operational stakeholders to provide meaningful commercial insight. This is a hands-on Financial Controller role suited to someone who enjoys taking ownership, improving processes and operating in a growing, entrepreneurial environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Taking ownership of the month-end, year-end and financial reporting processes, ensuring accurate and timely delivery.
- Preparing and reviewing group consolidations, including intercompany eliminations and multi-entity reporting.
- Overseeing balance sheet reconciliations, intercompany accounting and control accounts, ensuring discrepancies are investigated and resolved.
- Ensuring all financial information is appropriately reviewed, reconciled and finalised within agreed reporting deadlines.
- Maintaining and strengthening the group's financial controls, accounting policies and procedures.
- Reviewing monthly management accounts and providing clear analysis of financial performance, variances and key risks.
- Working closely with operational teams to monitor project profitability, WIP, cost-to-complete, margins, commitments and financial performance.
- Taking ownership of cash flow, working capital and short- to medium-term financial forecasting.
- Supporting budgeting, forecasting and wider financial planning activities.
- Providing senior management with commercially focused analysis and insight to support decision-making.
- Acting as the key point of escalation for complex accounting and financial control matters.
- Managing relationships with external auditors, tax advisers, banks and other professional advisers.
- Ensuring compliance with relevant accounting standards, statutory requirements and company policies.
- Identifying opportunities to improve systems, reporting, automation and financial processes as the business continues to scale.
- Supporting the finance function through periods of growth, change and increased operational complexity.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
