Story bring quality, reliability and expertise to complex construction environments across the UK; from luxury hotels and healthcare facilities to major commercial developments, historic refurbishments and landmark stadium projects. Today, with offices across the North West and Scotland, and an ambitious growth agenda, Story are seeking a Financial Controller who can help shape the next chapter of our journey.
This is a pivotal appointment; reporting directly to the Managing Director and forming part of the Senior Leadership Team, you will lead the finance function while acting as a trusted commercial adviser to the business. You will provide the financial insight, reporting capability and strategic challenge needed to support sustainable, profitable growth.

Story are ideally looking for a qualified accountant (e.g. ACCA, ACA or CIMA) who combines strong financial control with a deep understanding of the commercial realities of a project-based construction business. You will be ambitious, intellectually curious and motivated by the opportunity to make a genuine impact. This role will suit someone on an upward career trajectory who wants to influence business performance, support strategic decision-making and help build a best-in-class finance function.
A key part of the role will be transforming how information is captured, integrated and presented across the organisation. You'll take ownership of management information, business intelligence and executive reporting, developing insightful Power BI dashboards and automated reporting that connect financial, operational and commercial performance. You will also lead budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management and financial planning, while maintaining robust controls and governance across the business. Experience within the construction sector is important, including a strong understanding of CIS, VAT, project costing, contract performance, work in progress and construction cash flows.
