About the Role
We are looking for an experienced and commercially minded Financial Controller to join our growing business.
This is a senior finance position with responsibility for the day-to-day financial control of the business, including cash flow management, working capital, monthly management accounts, and payroll.
The successful candidate will be comfortable working in a fast-paced trading environment where accuracy, commercial awareness, and the ability to meet tight deadlines are essential.
Experience of working for a business importing goods from overseas, particularly from China and other international markets, would be highly advantageous.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Control & Reporting
- Take overall responsibility for the day-to-day financial control of the business.
- Prepare accurate monthly management accounts and financial reports.
- Ensure accounts are completed accurately and to strict monthly deadlines.
- Monitor budgets, margins, expenditure, and financial performance.
- Provide clear financial information and analysis to senior management.
- Identify financial risks, discrepancies, and opportunities for improvement.
- Maintain robust financial controls and accounting procedures.
Cash Flow & Working Capital
- Prepare and maintain accurate cash flow forecasts.
- Monitor daily and weekly cash positions and future funding requirements.
- Manage and improve working capital, including stock, debtors, and creditors.
- Monitor supplier payments and customer receipts.
- Identify opportunities to improve cash conversion and liquidity.
- Provide senior management with regular cash flow and working capital reporting.
Imports, Landed Costs & International Purchasing
- Manage the financial aspects of the company's international purchasing and import operations.
- Accurately calculate and monitor landed costs, including purchase price, freight, insurance, duty, customs charges, transport, and other associated costs.
- Ensure landed costs are accurately reflected in product margins and management accounts.
- Reconcile supplier invoices, shipping documentation, and import-related costs.
- Work closely with purchasing, logistics, and senior management to ensure accurate product costing.
- Monitor supplier balances and overseas payment commitments.

Payroll & Administration
- Oversee and/or process the company's monthly payroll, ensuring employees are paid accurately and on time.
- Ensure payroll records, deductions, pensions, and statutory requirements are correctly maintained.
- Work with external accountants, auditors, banks, and other professional advisers where required.
- Ensure VAT, tax, and other financial obligations are properly monitored and deadlines are met.
About You
We are looking for someone who is commercially focused, highly organized, and confident taking ownership of the finance function.
You will ideally have:
- Proven experience as a Financial Controller or similar senior finance position.
- Strong experience in management accounts and financial reporting.
- Excellent understanding of cash flow forecasting and working capital management.
- Experience of importing and international purchasing.
- Payroll experience.
- Excellent Excel skills and strong financial systems knowledge.
- Excellent attention to detail and numerical accuracy.
- The ability to work under pressure and meet tight and non-negotiable deadlines.
- Strong commercial awareness and the ability to translate financial information into practical business decisions.
- The confidence to challenge figures, processes, and decisions where appropriate.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work closely with directors and senior management.

Desirable Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; professional certifications such as CPA are preferred but not mandatory.
- Experience within retail, wholesale, e-commerce, consumer electronics, electrical goods, or another import-led trading business would be particularly advantageous.
- Experience of working with overseas suppliers, freight forwarders, customs, import duty, and international payments would also be highly desirable.
