Financial Controller
Nottingham
£85,000 + £5,500 car allowance + 7.5% bonus
2 days a week in the office
There are plenty of businesses talking about sustainability.
This one is actually delivering it.
The wider group works across major engineering, energy and infrastructure projects, helping businesses reduce energy use, lower carbon emissions and move towards net zero.
The division itself is already a substantial operation, with long term contracts, a strong reputation in its market and the potential to grow significantly over the next few years.
It is a good time to join.
You are not walking into a finance function that needs rescuing.
The team is stable, experienced and well regarded. The current Financial Controller is due to retire next year, which means you will get a proper handover from someone who knows the business inside out.
You will work with a Finance Director who remains close to the detail and a team that is practical, collaborative and low ego.
There is also a realistic opportunity to progress further as the senior finance team evolves.
The role offers scale, stability and longer term opportunity.
But it is important to be completely clear about the job itself.
This is a genuinely hands on Financial Controller role
The Financial Controller title can mean very different things from one business to another.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Every day your agent scans the market matching roles against what actually matters to you, not just keywords on a CV.
Why you're a good match
You’ve got the grades and the economics background, and your bank internship is exactly the experience this scheme looks for. Apply soon — deadlines close within the month.
Experience fit
Your summer at the bank plus your econometrics coursework map directly to the day-one responsibilities on this scheme — client modelling, market briefings, and deal support.
Only hits
No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
Here, it means taking responsibility for the quality of the numbers from start to finish.
You will lead people and work closely with senior stakeholders, but you will also need to understand the underlying accounts, get into the balance sheet, work through technical issues and step in personally when something needs resolving.
The main responsibilities include:
- Statutory accounts and external audit
- Group reporting and consolidation requirements
- Month end and year end close
- Balance sheet control and reconciliations
- Cash management, including a 13 week cash forecast
- Financial governance, controls and compliance
- Technical accounting queries
- Improving systems, controls and reporting processes
- Leading the financial accounting and transactional finance teams
This is not a role where you simply delegate the detail and review the finished result.
They need someone who wants to understand why a number has moved, can work through the issue properly and is willing to help fix it.
Who are they looking for?
You will be a qualified accountant with a strong technical financial accounting background.
Experience gained within practice would be particularly useful, especially if you have since moved into a large company, group or divisional environment.
You are likely to have solid experience across statutory reporting, audit, financial controls, cash management, balance sheets and a complex month end process.

Your very own career expert that helps elevate your application to the next level.
You will be someone who:
- Enjoys technical accounting and getting into the detail
- Can take ownership of accounts from start to finish
- Has worked within a large, complex or multi entity organisation
- Is organised, thorough and disciplined around controls and deadlines
- Can lead a team without becoming removed from the work they are doing
- Is practical, approachable and willing to support the team when required
The culture is collaborative and down to earth.
Seniority does not mean sitting above the detail, and people are expected to help each other when things get busy.
This is unlikely to suit someone whose background has mainly been management accounting, project accounting or commercial business partnering.
It is also unlikely to suit someone who is actively looking to move away from technical accounting and financial control.
For someone who genuinely enjoys this type of work, it offers considerable scale, a proper handover, a settled team and the chance to build a longer term career in a business working on meaningful projects.
Package
- £85,000 salary
- £5,500 car allowance
- 7.5% bonus (pays out!)
- Private healthcare
- 5.75% employer pension contribution
- Hybrid working, 2 days a week in Nottingham
