Financial Controller
Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Financial Controller will be responsible for the integrity of our financial information and the effective running of our finance operations.
This is a hands-on finance leadership role within a lean team, combining technical accounting, financial control, reporting, cash management, funding compliance, and team leadership.
You’ll play a central role in ensuring our financial information is accurate, timely, and robust, while working closely with the FP&A Manager to provide the reliable actuals and financial insight needed to support business planning and decision-making.
The role offers considerable breadth, including responsibility for our government subsidy claims, network-related stock and project accounting, statutory reporting, cash flow, and financial systems.

What you’ll be doing as a Financial Controller at Wessex Internet:
- Lead the day-to-day finance operations, including month-end close, management accounts, statutory reporting, group consolidation, VAT, payroll review, and balance sheet reconciliations.
- Own financial control and governance, ensuring accurate reporting, robust controls, appropriate accounting policies, and high-quality financial data across the business.
- Manage stock accounting and project costing, ensuring accurate allocation, reconciliation, and reporting of the company’s significant infrastructure and network-related assets.
- Own the government subsidy and grant accounting process, including BDUK/CDS claims, financial assurance, grant accounting, reconciliations, and management of clawback risk.
- Manage cash flow and funding requirements, including the 13-week cash flow forecast, working capital, debt and equity funding, supplier payments, and covenant compliance.
- Lead and develop the finance operations team, while partnering closely with the FP&A Manager and CFO to provide reliable financial information and continuously improve finance systems and processes.

What we’re looking for from our next Financial Controller at Wessex Internet:
- ACA, ACCA, or CIMA qualified, with strong technical accounting experience and a proven Financial Controller or senior finance background.
- Strong knowledge of UK GAAP, group consolidation, statutory accounts, audit, and financial controls.
- Experience working in a capital-intensive, infrastructure, construction, utilities, or telecommunications environment would be highly desirable.
- Experience with government grant or subsidy funding, including claims processing and grant accounting, would be advantageous.
- Strong experience across cash management, funding compliance, stock/inventory accounting, and financial systems, with ERP implementation experience desirable.
- A hands-on, resilient, and commercially minded leader with strong communication skills and the ability to lead a team, manage competing deadlines, and work confidently with senior stakeholders.
