Financial Controller (first move from practice)
Brighton, office based
£60,000 – 65,000 + benefits
Grafton Banks Finance is working with a large family-owned and industry-leading business, based in Brighton, to recruit their new Financial Controller role.
This business has a fantastic client base and continues to grow organically. The Financial Controller will report to the Finance Director and will lead a team to deliver all month-end accounting while also being instrumental in the year-end process and audit.
We are looking for a recently qualified accountant, either someone making their first move out of practice and into industry, or someone currently working in a similar position in industry. If moving out of practice you could be either doing an audit-based role in a larger firm or a more accounts preparation-based role in a smaller firm. Experience of managing teams is essential.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
