I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Candidate

- ACA qualified accountant (ACA preferred, although ACCA/CIMA candidates will also be considered).
- Experienced across financial controllership, accounting, management accounts, budgeting, forecasting and cash flow.
- Comfortable operating in a hands-on, entrepreneurial and changing environment rather than a highly structured corporate setting.
- Experienced working with multiple finance and operational systems, ideally including ERP, EPOS, HR and stock management platforms.
- Hospitality experience would be advantageous, particularly where combined with exposure to a technology or digitally enabled business.
- Ideally experienced within an investor-backed or high-growth environment, with an understanding of the pace and expectations that come with external investment.
- Comfortable working within a larger organisation but able to adapt quickly and remain hands-on within a smaller, evolving finance function.
- A strong communicator and natural mentor, able to build relationships across finance and the wider business.
