The Role
We are looking for an experienced, commercially minded Financial Controller to take ownership of the day-to-day financial management of the business.
This is a senior, hands-on role suited to someone who enjoys working in an SME or growing business environment and is comfortable operating autonomously. You will take responsibility for the complete finance cycle, from invoicing and cash collection through to management accounts, cash-flow forecasting, budgeting and group reporting.
Working closely with the CEO and wider leadership team, you will ensure the business has accurate, timely financial information, strong financial controls and, critically, clear visibility of its current and future cash position.
As part of a wider group, the Financial Controller will also represent the business from a finance perspective at regular group-level meetings, presenting financial performance, cash position and forecasts to group stakeholders.
This is not a traditional Finance Director or CFO position. We are looking for someone happy to remain close to the detail and take ownership of operational finance activities while bringing the experience, judgement and credibility expected of a senior finance professional.
Key Responsibilities
Management Reporting & Financial Control
- Own the monthly management accounts process, ensuring accurate and timely reporting
- Produce a clear monthly financial pack covering P&L, balance sheet, cash flow and key business metrics
- Provide meaningful variance analysis against budget, forecast and prior periods
- Maintain financial controls, processes and reporting disciplines
- Ensure balance sheet reconciliations and other core accounting controls are completed accurately
- Maintain oversight of the general ledger and integrity of financial data
- Identify financial risks, anomalies and areas requiring management attention
Invoicing & Cash Collection
- Own the end-to-end customer invoicing and cash collection process
- Ensure invoices are raised accurately and promptly, in line with customer contracts and agreed terms
- Maintain clear visibility of invoiced, accrued and expected revenue
- Own the accounts receivable ledger; ensure cash receipts are accurately allocated and reconciled
- Proactively manage outstanding debt and drive timely collection
- Maintain regular communication with customers on outstanding invoices and resolve billing queries
- Produce accurate aged-debt reporting and monitor debtor days and collection performance
- Escalate collection risks and significant overdue balances early
- Work with commercial and operational colleagues to resolve issues delaying invoicing or collection
- Continuously improve billing and collection processes to maximise cash conversion
Cash Management & Cash-Flow Forecasting
- Own the company's day-to-day cash position and cash-flow forecasting
- Maintain an accurate rolling short- and medium-term cash-flow forecast
- Provide visibility of expected receipts, payments, payroll, tax obligations and other cash movements
- Reconcile forecast cash movements against actuals and update assumptions accordingly
- Identify potential cash pressures or timing risks early and escalate to the CEO
- Maintain visibility of available cash and anticipated future funding requirements
- Model the cash impact of different commercial, operational and investment scenarios
- Work with the CEO and leadership team to optimise working capital and cash conversion
- Provide accurate cash-flow forecasts and commentary for group-level reporting
- Ensure management always has a reliable forward-looking view of liquidity and cash requirements

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
