Financial Controller

Company Overview

Duranta is a producer of gas and electricity from waste food and agricultural products. Duranta owns and operates a commercial-scale anaerobic digestion plant situated in Middlesbrough, Teesside. The plant processes c160,000 tonnes of food waste, crop, slurry and glycerol per annum into electricity and biomethane (via Air Liquide) with an equivalent electrical output of 7.4MW. The current group of companies includes the AD plant and a food waste processing facility.

The Role

Reporting to the Group Finance Director, with day-to-day reporting to the Duranta CEO, this position is an all-round role covering many aspects of financial and management accounting from receiving invoices to the production of accounts and forecasting. The position will be based at the Duranta plant in Middlesbrough, Teesside.

You will be responsible for understanding and interpreting the financial performance of the Plant. This will include maintaining a high level of financial control for all activities on site. Some HR responsibilities may also be required, such as payroll.

Responsibilities

  • Supporting the CEO to prepare the annual budget and forecasts
  • Review purchase invoices and payment run
  • Resolve invoice queries
  • Produce sales invoices and self-billing invoices in a timely manner
  • Review bank reconciliations
  • Implementation of a robust month-end process to cover accurate management accounts with variance analysis in a timely manner
  • Assist the CEO in the production of the Board report ahead of monthly meetings
  • Documentation of all financial procedures
  • Support preparation of monthly and annual OFGEM submissions (training to be provided in using the existing system)
  • Improve the efficiency and usage of the accounts systems
  • Maintain the fixed asset register
  • Complete the year end process and assist with the audit
  • Produce and manage an accurate 13 week rolling cash flow forecast
  • Oversee completion and submission of quarterly VAT returns
  • Payroll and HMRC returns
  • Pension returns including re-enrolment duties
  • Build and maintain good working relationships with senior management team and assist the CEO to ensure financial controls remain in place across the company.

Technical Requirements

  • Fully qualified accountant in either of the major financial qualifications ACA/ACCA or CIMA. QBE also considered
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a relevant role with a thorough practical understanding of accounting principles & techniques
  • Financial reporting & operational experience preferable
  • Comfortable working with IT systems, Sage in particular
  • Good Excel skills including pivot tables, vlookups, graphs & data analysis

You must be able to explain financial information to non-financial colleagues, provide accurate and timely information to a high standard. You should also be able to take the initiative and, for example, propose changes to financial processes and ways of working.

Pay

From £55,000 per annum. The role can flex in seniority, with scope to offer a higher salary and broader remit for candidates bringing more substantial experience and capability.
