Financial Controller / Company Accountant

📍 Location: Rawreth, Rayleigh, Essex
🕗 Hours: Monday–Friday | 8:00am–4:00pm
💷 Salary: Competitive – Dependent on Experience
We are looking to recruit an experienced Financial Controller / Company Accountant to take ownership of the finance function at T. J. Cottis Transport Ltd.
This is a senior, hands-on position within an established and growing family-run business. We are looking for someone who can confidently manage the day-to-day financial operation while providing the Directors with accurate reporting, commercial insight and forward-looking financial information.
The successful candidate will have responsibility for the full finance function, combining strong technical accounting knowledge with the ability to understand the commercial realities of a busy operational business.
The Role
Key responsibilities will include:
- Preparation and presentation of monthly management accounts
- Management of purchase and sales ledgers
- Credit control and debtor management
- Bank reconciliations
- Payroll management
- VAT and CIS returns
- Cash-flow management and forecasting
- Budget preparation and ongoing budget monitoring
- Financial reporting and analysis
- Monitoring company expenditure, margins and financial performance
- Supporting the Directors with commercial and financial decision-making
- Year-end preparation and liaison with external accountants
- Maintaining appropriate financial controls and procedures
- Ensuring HMRC and statutory compliance
- Identifying opportunities to improve financial processes, reporting and efficiency
- Taking overall ownership of the day-to-day finance function

About You
We are looking for an experienced finance professional who is comfortable taking responsibility and working closely with senior management.
Ideally, you will have:
- Significant experience as a Financial Controller, Company Accountant, Finance Manager or in a comparable senior finance role
- Strong experience producing management accounts and financial reports
- Excellent understanding of cash flow, budgeting and forecasting
- Strong knowledge of VAT, payroll and general accounting procedures
- Experience managing the complete finance function of an SME
- Excellent attention to detail and organisational skills
- The confidence to challenge figures, identify issues and provide meaningful financial insight to Directors
- The ability to work independently and take genuine ownership of the role
- Experience with accounting software such as Sage and/or Xero

ACA, ACCA or CIMA qualification would be highly advantageous, although we would also consider an exceptionally experienced candidate who is qualified by experience.
Industry Experience
Experience within haulage, transport, construction, waste management, aggregates, plant hire or a similar operational industry would be particularly advantageous.
Knowledge of CIS accounting and experience working within a business operating multiple divisions or revenue streams would also be beneficial.
