Company Description

Mbedza is a UK and Malawi registered charity working in partnership with communities in Malawi to prevent and relieve poverty. Recognizing that poverty is multi-dimensional, Mbedza runs a range of projects including fuel-efficient stoves, HIV testing, tree planting, and orphan education. The organization focuses on sustainable, community-led initiatives that improve health, economic resilience, and environmental outcomes. Team members collaborate across borders to support impactful programs that directly benefit vulnerable populations in Malawi.

Role Description

The Financial Director is a part-time, remote role responsible for overseeing Mbedza’s financial strategy, operations, and reporting. Day-to-day tasks include:

  • Developing and managing budgets
  • Monitoring cash flow
  • Ensuring accurate financial records and financial statements
  • Preparing regular financial reports for leadership and trustees
  • Conducting financial analysis to support decision-making
  • Maintaining compliance with UK and Malawi charity regulations

The Financial Director will work closely with project leads to allocate resources effectively, manage donor funds, and support grant applications and reporting. This position also contributes to strengthening financial controls, improving financial systems, and advising on long-term financial sustainability for all projects.

Qualifications

  • Strong Finance and Financial Planning skills to manage budgets, cash flow, and long-term funding strategies.
  • Expertise in Financial Statements and Financial Reporting to ensure accurate records and transparent reporting to stakeholders.
  • Solid Analytical Skills to interpret financial data, assess project viability, and support strategic decisions.
  • Experience with nonprofit or charity finance, including grant management and donor reporting, is highly beneficial.
  • Relevant professional qualification or degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field is preferred.
  • Proficiency with accounting software and spreadsheets, and strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote setting, communicate clearly with international teams, and manage multiple priorities.
  • Knowledge of UK charity financial regulations and familiarity with international development or work in low-income settings is an advantage.
