Finance Director
Growing SME | £20m Turnover Ambition | Strategic & Hands-On Leadership
Our client is an ambitious and rapidly growing SME entering an exciting phase of development. With revenues approaching £20m and strong growth plans, they are seeking an experienced and commercially astute Finance Director to join the executive leadership team.
Reporting directly to the CEO, this is a pivotal role that combines strategic leadership with hands-on financial management. The successful candidate will lead and develop a small finance team whilst ensuring robust financial governance, delivering insightful management information and supporting key commercial and strategic decisions across the business.
This role will suit a proactive Finance Director who thrives in entrepreneurial, owner-managed or PE-backed SME environments and enjoys operating close to the detail whilst influencing business performance at board level.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Finance & Leadership
- Act as the lead finance professional for the business, providing strategic financial leadership to the CEO and Board.
- Play a key role in shaping the future direction of the company, bringing commercial challenge, financial insight and strategic thinking to business decisions.
- Lead the annual business planning process, from agreeing key assumptions through to board approval.
- Support the evaluation of new business opportunities, investments and growth initiatives through robust financial analysis and challenge.

Financial Control & Governance
- Ensure appropriate financial controls, systems and governance frameworks are in place to support continued business growth.
- Oversee the preparation of statutory accounts, audits and regulatory filings, ensuring compliance with relevant accounting standards.
- Manage all taxation matters, ensuring compliance and advising leadership on tax considerations and risks.
- Oversee company secretarial responsibilities and corporate governance requirements.
Financial Planning & Commercial Insight
- Lead budgeting, forecasting and long-range financial planning processes.
- Develop and continually enhance management reporting, ensuring accurate, timely and meaningful business information is available to stakeholders.
- Establish and monitor meaningful KPI reporting to support performance improvement and decision making.
- Build robust financial models to assess investment opportunities, strategic initiatives and potential acquisition activity.
Cashflow, Funding & Stakeholder Management
- Take ownership of cashflow forecasting, liquidity planning and working capital management.
- Develop and maintain relationships with banks, lenders, auditors and professional advisers.
- Support funding requirements and financing activities, ensuring the business has the resources required to achieve its growth objectives.
Team Leadership
- Lead, mentor and develop a small finance team, creating a high-performance culture and building capability as the business grows.
- Ensure the finance function evolves alongside the business, implementing systems, processes and controls that support scale.
- Act as a visible member of the senior leadership team, fostering collaboration across all business functions.

About You
We are looking for a qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA or CIMA) with experience in a growing SME environment.
You will demonstrate:
- Previous experience as a Finance Director, Head of Finance or a commercially strong Financial Controller stepping into an FD role.
- Experience operating within a fast-paced, growing SME, ideally in businesses up to £20m turnover.
- Strong commercial acumen and the confidence to influence at Board level.
- Excellent financial modelling, forecasting and business planning skills.
- Experience managing banking and funding relationships.
- A hands-on approach and willingness to work both strategically and operationally.
- Proven ability to lead, develop and motivate a small finance team.
- Resilience, drive and an entrepreneurial mindset.
