Turn to Starboard (T2S) is a thriving charity that since its inception has provided over 6000 sailing opportunities to individuals and families impacted by military service. Core to Turn to Starboard’s success in delivering meaningful benefit to our beneficiaries, is the high level of veteran involvement both within the T2S core team and among those who volunteer with us. This community approach enables a sense of security; we are a tribe, one of belonging and understanding. It ensures our programmes are steered by those who understand the challenges of the community we seek to help. Many will view sailing as simply a leisure pursuit, but at T2S we know that for our beneficiaries, it can be so much more; it is a lifeline.
Turn to Starboard is facing an exhilarating period of growth following the success of our major adventure expedition, Full Circle, in 2026. We have record levels of requests for help from military veterans, nationwide media interest and fascinating new strategic relationships to navigate.
Following retirement of our previous Finance Lead Trustee we are now seeking an expert to support the board and the executive team with financial expertise during the next stage of our growth. This is a remote role involving occasional visits to the T2S office in Falmouth, Cornwall.

Overall Role
The Finance Lead Trustee is responsible for Board level oversight of the charity’s financial strategy and financial management including annual budgeting, fundraising initiatives, procurement & contract management, audit and financial risk management.
Role Summary
- Oversight and assistance with setting annual budgets.
- Oversight of financial systems, controls and reporting.
- Providing robust advice on fundraising initiatives.
Responsibilities
- Provide financial advice to the Board of Trustees.
- Provide oversight of the annual budgets in accordance with the charity’s strategic plan.
- Provide oversight of longer-term cash flow predictions to align with the strategic plan.
- Review and oversee the charity’s financial controls, records and systems.
- Provide advice to the Board and CEO on the financial implications of significant spending.
- Provide oversight of financial regulatory compliance
- Act as ambassador for the charity and support its profile, partnerships and fundraising where appropriate.
- Support audit processes.
- Lead financial risk assessment for the charity’s risk register

The Finance Lead Trustee shall be appointed for a period of 3 years. The Finance Lead Trustee may serve for a further 3-year period of office if elected to do so. Only in exceptional circumstances, when it is in the interests or needs of Turn to Starboard, will any further periods be permissible.
Time Commitment
The Finance Lead Trustee is expected to:
- Attend Board committee meetings as required, typically once per quarter
- Hold regular meetings with the CEO and senior staff, typically once per month
- Occasionally represent the charity at key events, stakeholder meetings and sector engagements where appropriate.
- Undertake additional duties reasonably associated with the role.
Overall, typically 1-2 days per month, working remotely
Person
- Experience in strategic financial planning.
- Management board level experience
- Appropriate financial qualification
- An understanding of charity SORP (Statement of Recommended Practice) and nonprofit fund accounting (or a willingness to learn)
- Experience of financial risk management
- (Ideally) professional experience working within the Charity, Armed Forces, Defence, Marine or Veterans' sectors
