Job Purpose

The Finance Assistant provides transactional and administrative support to the finance function. The role contributes to accurate processing, record keeping, reconciliations, and the smooth running of day-to-day finance operations within a regulated banking environment.


Key Responsibilities

  • Process invoices, payments, expenses, and other routine finance transactions.
  • Assist with bank reconciliations and ledger postings.
  • Maintain finance filing, records, and supporting documentation.
  • Support month-end tasks and the preparation of schedules.
  • Collate information required for reporting, audit, and regulatory submissions.
  • Assist with payment controls and basic treasury administration.
  • Track outstanding items, queries, and approvals.
  • Escalate discrepancies or unusual items promptly.
  • Support the finance team with general administrative duties.
  • Maintain confidentiality and always follow internal controls.
  • Supporting of preparing periodic reporting to parent bank (Bank of Ceylon, Colombo), including consolidated statements, cross-border exposure reports & risk dashboard submissions.
  • Assist authorized payments in accordance with the bank’s payment schedule and internal controls framework.

3.1 Regulatory Reporting

  • Support the preparation & submission of monthly, quarterly and annual regulatory returns to the PRA & FCA, including COREP, FINREP and FSA returns.
  • Assist in reconciling regulatory positions and ensuring returns are accurate, complete and submitted within prescribed deadlines.
  • Support the ongoing regulatory reporting improvement programme, including system implementation, process documentation and quality assurance.
  • Develop working knowledge of the bank’s regulatory reporting framework and provide cover for the finance officer as required.

3.2 Management Accounts

  • Support the monthly management accounts production cycle, ensuring all data inputs are prepared accurately and on time to meet the book close timetable.
  • Contribute to the preparation of management information for ALCO and senior management, including key risk indicators, early warning indicators and liquidity stress testing inputs.
  • Assist in maintaining the integrity of financial records through reconciliations, audit trails and timely identification and escalation of discrepancies.

3.3 Governance & Administration

  • Support finance related governance processes including VAT return preparation, assistance with the annual report, pillar 3, audit support, ICAAP/ILAAP data preparation and corporate tax workings.
  • Maintain process documentation across finance and regulatory reporting workflows to support operational resilience and business continuity within the team.

3.4 Payroll Support

  • Assist with monthly payroll calculations in support of the finance officer.

Additional Duties

  • The postholder may be required to undertake other reasonable duties consistent with the level and responsibility of the role. This may include supporting related finance, treasury, reporting, audit, or administrative tasks as required by business need.

Authority and Accountability

The Finance Assistant is accountable for accurate processing, filing, and administrative support. The role must operate within defined controls and escalate issues appropriately.

  • Actively support the finance team’s process improvement and automation agenda including the development of automated tools and workflows across management accounts production, regulatory reporting and payment processing.
  • Contribute to the implementation and ongoing use of the ALMIS regulatory reporting platform and other finance systems.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce manual effort and improve accuracy across recurring finance processes.

Working Relationships

Works closely with the Finance Officer and wider finance team to support day-to-day finance operations and maintain accurate records.


Person Specification

Essential

  • Part-qualified or newly qualified (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent) accountant or finance graduate with relevant banking experience.
  • Good numerical and Excel skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and organisation.
  • Ability to work accurately and follow procedures.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Demonstrate interest in process improvement and financial systems.
  • Prior exposure to regulatory reporting in a PRA or FCA regulated environment desirable.

Desirable

  • Experience in banking or a regulated environment.
  • Working toward AAT, ACCA, CIMA, or similar qualification.
  • Familiarity with finance systems and document management processes.
