Financial Software Engineer
Location: London / Hybrid
Contract: Initial contract - 6 months +
Day rate: £600 - £700 p/d
The role
A growing financial-markets business is looking for a hands-on Finance Reconciliation Engineer to build new reconciliations within its existing finance and operational systems environment.
The initial focus will be on daily P&L, cash and bank reconciliations, together with the integrations needed to bring data into the reconciliation platform.
This is an engineering and delivery role. The successful contractor must have experience building reconciliation rules and integrations, rather than solely processing or investigating reconciliation breaks as a user.
Responsibilities
- Design and build new financial reconciliations.
- Develop daily P&L, cash and bank reconciliations.
- Gather reconciliation requirements from finance and operational stakeholders.
- Configure or develop matching rules, tolerances and exception logic.
- Build the integrations required to bring data into the reconciliation platform.
- Map data between trading, middle-office, banking, finance and reconciliation systems.
- Develop SQL queries, scripts or interfaces to transform and validate data.
- Build automated reconciliation processes and scheduled data feeds.
- Investigate data-quality issues, unmatched items and reconciliation breaks.
- Work with finance users to understand discrepancies and expected accounting outcomes.
- Support testing, user acceptance and production implementation.
- Build appropriate reporting, monitoring and exception-management processes.
- Document data sources, matching rules, integrations and operational procedures.

Essential experience
- Direct experience building financial reconciliations.
- Experience creating matching rules, tolerances and exception logic.
- Experience with daily P&L reconciliations.
- Experience with cash and bank reconciliations.
- Strong SQL skills.
- Development or scripting experience using Python, Java, C#, PowerShell or a comparable technology.
- Experience building data feeds, interfaces or system integrations.
- Understanding of financial transactions, balances, cash movements and P&L.
- Experience working within financial services, trading, banking or capital markets.
- Ability to work with a specialist, proprietary or less commonly used reconciliation platform.
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.

Desirable experience
- Reconciliations within a market maker, broker, investment bank or trading firm.
- Trade, position or settlement reconciliations.
- Multi-currency cash reconciliations.
- Integration between trading, middle-office and finance systems.
- General-ledger or accounting-system integrations.
- Automated exception management and workflow.
- Experience replacing or improving manual reconciliation processes.
Candidate profile
The successful contractor will combine a good understanding of finance and reconciliations with practical development and integration skills.
They must be able to speak confidently with finance users, understand what needs to be reconciled and then build the required rules, data feeds and matching processes within the existing platform.
