About the Team
Financial Stability Strategy and Analysis is a team within HM Treasury’s Financial Stability Group. We supervise and assess financial stability risks, including the condition of the banking sector, non-bank financial intermediaries, and funding markets. We advise Ministers and Treasury’s Executive Management Board on significant issues and co-lead the Economic Risks Group.
We lead various policy priorities, including handling the UK’s macroprudential policy framework and setting the remit for the Bank of England’s Financial Policy Committee. We also advise on financial stability issues related to foreign jurisdictions and explore emerging structural challenges to the financial system. These include impacts from new technologies, climate change, and shifting trends.
Working together is critical to our success. We keep regular contact with the investment banking sector, coordinate with the Bank of England and Financial Conduct Authority, and participate in international assessment and policy-making via the Financial Stability Board.
The team accommodates flexible and inclusive working patterns and works across different locations.
About the Job
Some of the key responsibilities of this role may include:
- Delivering original analysis on current matters to deepen the Treasury’s expertise in financial system risks, and support policy development. Examples of analysis undertaken by the team include deep dives on developments in private markets, AI investment trends, and geopolitical risks.
- Presenting and communicating your analysis and assessments of emerging topical issues to senior audiences in Treasury, including delivering briefings for ministers and senior officials.
- Maintaining positive relationships with colleagues across the Treasury, Government and the UK’s financial regulators (particularly the Bank of England and Financial Conduct Authority).
- Contributing to policy development where financial stability risks have been identified, including by supporting Treasury’s engagement with the G7, G20, Financial Stability Board, and the Financial Policy Committee.
- Providing live market monitoring along with evaluations of market risk for HMT seniors and Ministers, with opportunities to develop relevant Bloomberg skills and in-depth market knowledge.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

These positions are exciting and varied roles suitable either for recent graduates, or for experienced candidates seeking a new challenge. You will work with a team of analysts and policy officials as we explore the biggest challenges facing the UK financial system.
Through original analysis and engagement with key partners, you will build the Treasury’s expertise, influence policy development, and support the Treasury’s response to global events.
Both positions sit within Treasury’s Financial Stability Group. We are a friendly, diverse and inclusive group, supporting different working patterns, and with colleagues working from different locations. The Group’s outstanding offering includes the Women in Financial Stability Network to provide a space for women to connect and to support their career development. All colleagues are able to benefit from Treasury’s generous annual leave, parental leave packages, and flexible and hybrid working options (where business needs allow).
