ABOUT TETHION

Safety is shaped by our reasoning, not by the absence of consequence.

That principle sits behind how we approach our work.

Tethion is an independent consultancy specialising in fire safety and building safety services. We work with clients, designers and contractors across a varied portfolio of healthcare, residential, commercial, life sciences, education and complex existing-building projects.

We're now looking for a Fire Engineer / Senior Fire Engineer to join us and help grow our fire engineering capability.

This is an opportunity to join Tethion at an early stage of our growth. You'll work directly with the Director, take ownership of projects and have a genuine influence over how our fire engineering service develops.

THE ROLE

You'll work across new-build and existing-building projects, developing fire strategies and providing practical fire engineering advice from early design through technical design, construction and completion.

Our fire consultancy service covers the development and coordination of fire strategies across RIBA Stages 2–5, including consideration of means of escape and evacuation, compartmentation, fire resistance, internal and external fire spread, active fire safety systems and firefighting provisions.

Depending on your experience, you'll be involved in:

  • Developing fire strategies from preliminary design principles through to coordinated Technical Fire Strategy Reports and completion.
  • Advising on means of escape and evacuation, compartmentation, fire resistance, internal and external fire spread, fire detection and alarm, emergency lighting, suppression, smoke control and firefighting access and facilities.
  • Reviewing architectural, MEP and specialist design information for consistency with the agreed fire strategy.
  • Identifying and assessing departures from recognised guidance and developing proportionate solutions appropriate to the project.
  • Preparing clear technical reports, fire strategy mark-ups and advice for clients and project teams.
  • Attending design team meetings and engaging with Building Control and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Reviewing design changes, technical submissions and construction-stage information where these may affect the fire strategy.
  • Undertaking site inspections where required.
  • Working alongside our building safety services, providing exposure to the wider regulatory and compliance context in which fire engineering decisions are made.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

Our core service is centred on fire strategy development, coordination and professional judgement. Experience in engineering assessments (using the PFPF methodology), computational modelling, detailed smoke-control analysis and structural fire engineering is not essential but would be welcomed.

ABOUT YOU

We're open to speaking with people at different stages of their careers. You might already be operating at Senior Fire Engineer level, or you may be a Fire Engineer looking for greater responsibility and the opportunity to develop as part of a growing practice.

We're particularly interested in someone with a strong understanding of fire safety legislation and recognised guidance applicable in the UK, who is confident taking responsibility for their work and communicating technical matters directly with project teams.

We advocate an approach to fire engineering that goes beyond the production of a report. For us, it's equally important that the fire strategy, its underlying assumptions and performance requirements are clearly understood by the wider project team and appropriately integrated into the developing design.

You'll ideally have a relevant qualification in fire engineering, fire safety or a related discipline with transferable skills and knowledge; experience preparing or contributing to fire strategies; a good working knowledge of the Building Regulations, Approved Document B, HTMs and relevant British Standards; an understanding of the interfaces between architectural, structural and building services design; and strong technical writing and communication skills.

Membership of, or progress towards membership of, a relevant professional institution would be welcomed.

Experience of healthcare, higher-risk buildings, existing buildings, passive fire protection or projects requiring solutions beyond straightforward prescriptive guidance would be particularly valuable.

WHY TETHION?

We're building something, rather than asking you to simply fill a position within an established structure.

You'll have direct access to decision-making, visibility across projects and clients, and the opportunity to influence the technical direction of the fire engineering service as it grows.

For the right person, we see this developing beyond project delivery. There will be opportunities to take greater ownership of projects, build client relationships, shape our technical standards and processes, and ultimately play a significant role in growing the fire engineering team.

We support remote and hybrid working and are more interested in finding the right person than prescribing where they need to sit every day.

INTERESTED?

If the opportunity sounds of interest, or you'd simply like an informal and confidential conversation about what we're building at Tethion, please get in touch with Hassan Ahmed at hassan@tethion.co.uk.

No recruitment agencies, please.
