Fire Engineer

Location: Eltham
Salary: Negotiable

Main Purpose of Job

Join our growing Building Safety team in Eltham and help shape safer buildings across a diverse portfolio of projects. As a Fire Engineer, you'll lead the delivery of practical, compliant fire engineering solutions, provide trusted technical advice, and make a visible impact from concept through to occupation.

Role Information

  • Lead the delivery of fire engineering commissions across a range of building types and sectors, from feasibility and concept design through to construction, handover, and occupation
  • Prepare, review, and oversee fire strategy reports, technical notes, design mark-ups, engineering assessments, and supporting documentation in line with project requirements
  • Develop proportionate, practical, and evidence-based fire safety solutions using relevant legislation, statutory guidance, British Standards, and recognised fire engineering principles
  • Provide technical advice on means of warning and escape, evacuation strategy, fire-resisting construction, compartmentation, external fire spread, smoke control, firefighting access and facilities, and active and passive fire protection systems
  • Support projects involving Higher-Risk Buildings, including input to Gateway submissions, safety case information, fire appraisal reports, and Building Safety Act compliance requirements
  • Represent the fire engineering discipline at client meetings, design workshops, site inspections, and discussions with Building Control, fire and rescue services, and other regulatory stakeholders
  • Collaborate effectively with architects, design teams, contractors, clients, and internal multidisciplinary teams to deliver coordinated, buildable, and compliant design outcomes
  • Undertake technical reviews, peer reviews, and quality assurance of fire engineering outputs prepared by others, ensuring consistency, accuracy, and professional robustness
  • Mentor and support junior and intermediate fire engineers, contributing to technical development, CPD activity, and a positive knowledge-sharing culture
  • Manage project scope, programme, resources, fees, and commercial performance, maintaining strong client relationships and supporting business development, bids, and fee proposals

Essential Skills/Qualifications

  • Degree in Fire Engineering, Fire Safety Engineering, or a related discipline
  • Fire engineering consultancy experience across new-build, refurbishment, and existing-building projects
  • Experience developing fire strategies across RIBA Stages 1-6
  • Knowledge of UK fire safety legislation, standards, and the Building Safety Act
  • Experience with Higher-Risk Buildings, fire safety assessments, and design reviews
  • Strong understanding of fire behaviour, evacuation, and protection systems
  • Confident communicator with strong technical report-writing skills
  • Ability to manage projects, deadlines, budgets, and client relationships
  • Commercially aware, organized, and committed to professional development
  • Ability to lead workstreams and support junior colleagues
  • Membership of the Institution of Fire Engineers or another relevant professional body is an advantage but not essential
  • Experience supporting business development
