Fire & Security Systems Engineer

Location: Plymouth, working across Devon, Cornwall and the wider South West

Job Type: Full-time, Permanent

Salary: Dependent on experience and qualifications

About the Role

Uni-Lec is looking for an experienced Fire & Security Systems Engineer to join our growing engineering team. We're looking for someone with a strong background in fire detection and alarm systems, together with practical experience across security systems including CCTV, intruder alarms and access control.

The successful candidate will be involved in the installation, design, commissioning, maintenance and fault-finding of fire and security systems across a varied range of commercial and residential projects.

The role will also provide the opportunity to develop beyond traditional fire and security engineering. Uni-Lec delivers professional AV, networking and automation systems, and full training will be provided in Lutron, Control4 and other automation technologies.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Installing, commissioning, servicing and fault-finding fire detection and alarm systems
  • Designing and commissioning fire and security systems
  • Installing, commissioning and maintaining CCTV and intruder alarm systems
  • Installing, commissioning and maintaining access control systems, including Paxton Net2 and similar platforms
  • Testing systems and completing the required documentation
  • Diagnosing faults and identifying practical solutions
  • Working independently on customer sites and alongside the wider engineering team
  • Liaising professionally with customers, contractors and other trades
  • Working within secure or restricted environments, complying with all applicable safeguarding, security and site-access requirements
  • Travelling to sites throughout Devon, Cornwall and the wider South West
  • Occasionally working away from home where projects require it
  • Undertaking manufacturer and specialist training in Lutron, Control4 and other AV and automation technologies

What We're Looking For

Essential

  • A relevant recognised fire alarm qualification
  • Proven practical experience working with fire detection and alarm systems
  • Good understanding of fire alarm systems, relevant standards and industry good practice
  • Experience commissioning and fault-finding fire alarm systems
  • Good working knowledge of security systems including CCTV and intruder alarms
  • Experience working with access control systems
  • Ability to work independently and take responsibility for works on site
  • Strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills
  • Good communication skills and a professional approach with customers
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Willingness to travel and occasionally work away when required
  • Ability to obtain and maintain the DBS, security vetting and client/site clearances required for the role

Desirable

  • FIA qualifications
  • Experience designing fire detection and alarm systems
  • Experience with Paxton Net2 or similar access control systems
  • Structured data cabling and networking experience
  • Electrical installation experience or qualifications
  • Experience with professional AV systems
  • Experience with Control4, Lutron, smart home or building automation systems
  • Broader experience across integrated fire, security, access control, networking or AV systems

Previous Lutron or Control4 experience is not required. Full training will be provided.

Due to the nature of our work, including projects within schools, defence environments and other sensitive or restricted locations, the successful candidate will be required to undergo appropriate pre-employment screening.

This may include an Enhanced DBS check, where the role and work being undertaken are eligible for that level of check, together with additional client-specific and national security vetting where required.

Appointment and continued employment will be subject to the successful candidate obtaining and maintaining the clearances necessary to undertake the duties of the role.
