The Opportunity
This is a key technical role within Armstrong Priestley's Service Department, ideally suited to an experienced fire sprinkler service engineer who wants to use their field knowledge in a broader support position. You will connect our site engineers, customers, suppliers and internal teams, turning site findings into clear actions, accurate quotations and correctly resourced remedial work.
You will have ownership of the journey from engineer report to completed follow-up work. The role combines technical problem-solving, estimating, customer communication and operational coordination, with less routine travel than a field-based position and genuine influence over service quality.
What You Will Do
- Review service, inspection, call-out and defect reports for completeness, accuracy and technical clarity.
- Interpret site findings, photographs, test results, asset information, drawings and service history to determine the appropriate next steps.
- Challenge or clarify reports when information is incomplete, inconsistent or insufficient to create a safe and accurate scope.
- Identify defects, non-compliances and risks, escalating complex or safety-critical matters promptly.
- Prepare clear, accurate and commercially sound quotations for repairs, replacements, upgrades and remedial works.
- Define labour, materials, access requirements, specialist resources, exclusions, lead times and customer responsibilities within each scope.
- Select suitable components and obtain supplier pricing, considering compatibility, compliance, availability and whole-life value.
- Explain findings, recommendations and technical options to customers in straightforward language.
- Support quotation follow-up and handover accepted work with a complete, practical job pack.
- Raise and manage material requirements and purchase requests in line with approved quotations and company controls.
- Check specifications, quantities, part numbers and system compatibility before materials are ordered.
- Monitor orders and lead times and confirm deliveries are complete, correct and undamaged before work is scheduled or materials are issued.
- Resolve shortages, substitutions, returns and supplier queries quickly to minimise delays and aborted visits.
- Provide practical technical support to engineers before, during and after site visits, including fault-finding and component identification.
- Attend site when a complex survey, technical assessment or customer meeting requires your experience.
- Work closely with service coordination, projects, design, sales and accounts to keep actions moving and customers informed.
- Maintain a clear audit trail from the original engineer finding through quotation, order, completion and close-out.
- Share lessons learned, recurring defects and product knowledge to improve report quality, first-time fixes and team capability.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Technical Standards and Quality
- Ensure recommendations and scopes reflect the standards, rules and guidance applicable to each system, including BS EN 12845, LPC Rules and relevant manufacturer requirements.
- Support accurate service records, certification, asset information and close-out documentation, and never compromise system integrity, compliance or customer protection for speed or cost.
What We Are Looking For
Essential
- Substantial hands-on experience in the fire sprinkler industry, ideally as a sprinkler service, maintenance or commissioning engineer.
- Strong practical knowledge of servicing, testing, fault-finding and remedial work on fire sprinkler systems.
- Working knowledge of BS EN 12845, LPC Rules and other standards relevant to Armstrong Priestley's service portfolio.
- Sound understanding of sprinkler-system configurations and equipment, including pumps, tanks, valves, controls, alarm interfaces, pipework and sprinkler heads.
- Ability to interpret engineer reports, drawings, schematics, specifications and technical product information.
- Experience converting technical findings into clear scopes of work, labour allowances and material requirements.
- Strong written and verbal communication, with the confidence to advise engineers and explain technical matters to customers.
- Good commercial judgement, attention to detail and the ability to manage several priorities without losing ownership.
- Competence with Microsoft Office and confidence using service-management, quotation and purchasing systems.
- A full UK driving licence and willingness to attend occasional site visits.
Desirable—not essential
- Experience preparing remedial quotations, estimates or small-works proposals.
- Knowledge of BS 9251, watermist, dry/wet risers, hydrants or related fixed fire-protection systems.
- Recognised sprinkler, LPCB/BASFA, mechanical engineering or building-services training or qualification.
- Experience coordinating suppliers, purchasing materials or planning small remedial works.
- A valid CSCS card and/or relevant health and safety qualification.
The Behaviours That Matter
- Technical credibility — your judgement is grounded in practical site experience and a commitment to doing the right thing.
- Thoroughness — you notice missing details, test assumptions and care about specifying the right solution.
- Commercial awareness — you understand labour, materials, access and risk, not only the technical fix.
- Calm support — you can help an engineer under pressure and give customers confidence without over-promising.
- Ownership — you follow actions through, communicate early and close the loop.
- Continuous improvement — you look for practical ways to improve reports, processes and service delivery.
