Firefighters – (external transfers for firefighters already competent in role only)
Location: Aldermaston and Burghfield sites with free onsite parking.
Package: Base salary £49,573 plus 25% shift allowance (with additional allowances also applied)
Working pattern: The role is full-time and will follow the standard 2-2-4 Fire Service shift pattern. Day shifts are 0730-1730, Night shifts are 1730-0730.

AWE is currently inviting applications for transfer from competent WDS or On Call firefighters who are currently active in role.
The role of a firefighter at AWE is to save life, protect property, protect the environment, and provide a service to the business and local community.
To demonstrate a greater knowledge and understanding of working for AWE Fire and Rescue Service, you will be required to attend an interview and a fitness assessment.
Competent Firefighters wishing to transfer to AWE FRS should be aware that conduct and attendance records will be taken into consideration and will form part of the selection process.
As a firefighter at AWE, you will be required to:
- Respond immediately and safely to all emergency calls and requests for assistance.
- Deal with emergencies as directed and work effectively and efficiently as an integral part of a disciplined team.
- Minimise distress and suffering and provide medical care.
- Establish and maintain the confidence of members of AWE.
- Work with all members of the AWE community, being sensitive to the needs of others, particularly with regards to equality, diversity and inclusion.
- Provide general fire safety advice and guidance to people when requested.
- Assist in fire service initiatives, including the giving of general fire safety advice and guidance to all members of the AWE community through a variety of engagement opportunities and training activities.
- Support AWE FRS in providing inspections of fire safety equipment in AWE facilities as part of a fire safety legislative requirement.
- Practice and promote Health & Safety policies to maintain a safe working environment.
- Maintain the required level of physical fitness to enable you to undertake all duties of a firefighter, completing a 6 Monthly fitness test.
- Maintain all firefighting and emergency equipment in a state of readiness, including cleaning, repairing and testing.
- Maintain a good knowledge base of the layout of both Aldermaston and Burghfield sites.
- Maintain a good knowledge base of the risks, possible hazards and water supplies to be found within both Aldermaston and Burghfield sites.
- Complete basic paperwork and routine administration, including recording of information.
- Keep personal records up to date.
- Take part in a continuous training programme by attending lectures, exercises, practice training sessions and other forms of training to maintain competency levels.
- Attend any internal / external training courses, as directed.
- Undertake established processes as required to achieve “competent” status.
- To undertake Assessment and Internal Verification as required in accordance AWE FRS Development/Training Policies.
- Actively comply with AWE policy to assist in eliminating discrimination and in maintaining a fair, positive, and productive working environment, to meet statutory obligations and good employment practice.
- Maintain safety critical competencies in line with local and national guidelines.
- Maintain site specific knowledge.

Who are we looking for?
We do need you to have the following:
- Must be a competent, serving member of a Fire and Rescue Service having completed an NVQ Level 3 Emergency Fire Services Operations in the Community or equivalent/recognised qualification appertaining to the role of a competent firefighter.
- Must have a full and valid UK driving licence.
The role will also require you to be willing and able to:
- Respond to and deal with hazardous material incidents.
- Work in designated areas.
- Commit to the duty shift system (2 days/2 nights and 4 off).
- Work at either AWE site as directed.
- Take part in the on-call duty system (note – this is system designed to provide resilience for crewing numbers and is different to the ‘On Call’ duty system operated in local authority Fire and Rescue Services. It does not require you to live within 4 minutes of AWE).
- Maintain the required level of fitness.
- Maintain a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) certificate.
- Take part in offsite convoy duties.
Whilst not to essential, the following qualifications would be desirable:
- Level 3 Medical Skills (IEC/FREC/FPOS).
- Emergency Response Driving (ERD).
