Role: Experienced Firmware Design Engineer
Experience: At least 3-5 years of industrial experience in firmware design.
Location: Cambridge
Salary: Up to £70,000
Purpose / Role Overview
The purpose of this role is to design, develop, and deliver production-ready firmware for products, ensuring compliance with functional, regulatory, quality, and manufacturing requirements.
The ideal candidate will possess strong firmware design and development skills, with a proven track record of delivering firmware for commercial products from concept through to production.
Who You Are
We’re looking for a motivated and passionate person who has a strong interest in embedded software. You enjoy writing code, building quick prototypes and you have a good working knowledge of electronics circuits.
- You’re organized, methodical and take pride in doing things well.
- You love debugging code, probing signals and always seek to understand the fundamental reason when things don't work.
- You are capable of developing code from either a blank slate or building on an existing codebase.
- You understand the need for good documentation and don't see it as an impediment.
- You are a team player and like bouncing technical ideas with your colleagues.
Main Responsibilities & Accountabilities
- Full ownership of all embedded firmware development activities to deliver complete firmware solutions, from concept to final product.
- This is a hands-on role that involves requirements capture, code development & firmware testing.
- Ability to generate detailed software requirements from high level product level features. This primarily includes working with non-technical stakeholders to capture intent and translate those to detailed requirements.
- Troubleshooting faults at code, and system level. Investigation and root cause analysis of problems and finding solutions.
- Continuous design improvement of existing products, to achieve performance improvements, cost-down targets and part obsolescence management.
- Creation and maintenance of a complete set of design documentation, including requirements document, software design document, software programming instructions, validation and verification documentation, etc).
- Provide technical support to the Manufacturing, Quality, Repairs and Customer Services functions.
- Evaluation of new technologies relevant to product development and generally keeping up to date with developments in technology and regulations.
- Working together with electronics hardware engineers to deliver complete electronics solutions for products.

Skills, Knowledge & Competencies
- Experience designing embedded software for high volume commercial products.
- Selection of appropriate microcontroller and generation of pin assignments based on product functional requirements, optimising for cost, performance, and efficient resource utilisation.
- Bare metal & RTOS microcontroller software development in C.
- Detailed understanding of microcontroller peripherals down to register level and have experience writing low-level drivers for SPI / I2C / UART / ADC / PWM /etc.
- Have a strong understanding of embedded system architecture and operation, including low-level hardware and software interactions, beyond the use of frameworks, libraries, or code-examples.
- Able to write non-blocking, clean, maintainable and reusable code from general requirements.
- Complex problem-solving skills, attention to detail and a methodical mindset.
- Ability to read electronics schematic diagrams, with a good understanding of electronic hardware design and circuit operation.
- Very comfortable with lab equipment such as digital oscilloscope, signal generators, logic analysers, etc) and have basic soldering and prototyping skills.
- Experience with IOT technologies & common network protocols (Wi-Fi / BLE / MQTT / etc).
- Experience of working within a Quality System ideally EN ISO 13485 or ISO 9001 and awareness of validation and verification procedures.

Qualifications & Professional Experience
- Degree in Electronics Engineering.
- At least 3-5 years of industrial experience in firmware design.
Desirable Skills & Experience
- Hardware design experience.
- Familiarity with CE directives & standards such as EN62304.
- App development experience for iOS / Android devices.
