Role Purpose
We are seeking an outstanding sports medicine physician to join our high-performance Medical Department and play a pivotal role in the delivery of world-class medical care to our First Team.
Working collaboratively within an integrated multidisciplinary performance environment, the successful candidate will provide expert clinical leadership in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of injury and illness. They will contribute to the department's philosophy of delivering evidence-based, athlete-centred care that maximises player availability and supports sustained elite performance.
This is a demanding role requiring exceptional clinical judgement, professionalism and discretion. The successful candidate will thrive in high-pressure environments, communicate effectively across multiple stakeholders, and demonstrate the ability to make complex medical decisions in time-critical situations.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
- Deliver expert medical assessment, diagnosis and management of injured and unwell First Team players, working collaboratively with the wider medical and performance team to optimise clinical outcomes
- Provide daily medical support during First Team training sessions
- Provide medical expertise to Academy squads, when required
- Coordinate specialist consultations, investigations and referrals for First Team players, attending appointments where appropriate to ensure continuity of care
- Undertake home visits and out-of-hours clinical reviews, as required
- Conduct comprehensive pre-signing medical examinations and pre-season health screenings.
- Maintain an advanced understanding of concussion assessment, management and return-to-play protocols
- Coordinate cardiac screening programmes for all First Team players, ensuring compliance with FA, UEFA and Club screening requirements, with appropriate follow-up of investigations and results
- Maintain accurate, contemporaneous and confidential electronic medical records for all consultations, assessments and treatments
- Oversee medication governance, including stock control, prescribing standards and regulatory compliance
- Participate as an active member of the Club's Clinical Governance framework, contributing to quality assurance, audit and continuous service improvement

Multidisciplinary Working
- Attend and actively contribute to daily Medical Department meetings, multidisciplinary rehabilitation meetings and performance planning discussions
- Foster clear, proactive and collaborative communication with the Head Doctor, Head of Medicine, medical colleagues, coaching staff and performance practitioners to ensure aligned decision-making
- Remain accessible and responsive to players, coaches and medical colleagues outside standard working hours, when operationally required
- Contribute to the ongoing development of departmental clinical pathways, protocols, research initiatives and service delivery
Governance and Compliance
- Ensure full compliance with all Club Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Emergency Action Plans (EAPs) and relevant clinical governance processes, reviewing and updating documentation where required
- Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of FA, UEFA and WADA anti-doping regulations, providing education to players and supporting all anti-doping procedures and testing protocols
- Ensure the highest standards of professional practice, confidentiality and ethical conduct at all times
Matchday Responsibilities
- Provide medical cover for designated First Team fixtures, including home and away matches, domestic and European competitions, pre-season and post-season tours, as directed by the Head Doctor
- Deliver comprehensive matchday medical preparation, ensuring all medical equipment, emergency supplies and medications are available, compliant and operational
- Lead the on-field assessment and emergency management of injured players, making return-to-play or removal decisions under pressure
- Work collaboratively with coaching staff, the Head Doctor and Head of Medicine to support timely, player-centred medical decision-making
- Coordinate medical logistics for away fixtures and international tours, ensuring adherence to departmental SOPs and emergency procedures
- Liaise professionally with opposition club medical teams regarding player care, emergency planning and medical facilities
- Ensure all medical equipment and consumables are maintained and available throughout training, travel and competition
Safeguarding Responsibilities
- Have a duty to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people
- Act in accordance with the organisation’s safeguarding policies and procedures at all times
- Be alert to signs of abuse, neglect, or safeguarding concerns and report these appropriately
- Maintain professional boundaries and act as a positive role model when working with or around children
- Attend safeguarding training as required and keep knowledge up to date

Person Specification
Qualifications / Training
Essential Criteria
- Full GMC registration with a license to practise
- Diploma or MSc in Sport & Exercise Medicine or an equivalent recognised qualification
- Demonstrable experience working with elite-level professional athletes
- Comprehensive knowledge of the WADA Code and UK Anti-Doping regulations
- Substantial experience in the assessment and management of concussion
- Current accreditation in pitch-side immediate care / resuscitation (e.g. ATMMiF, or equivalent)
- High level of proficiency in the diagnosis and clinical management of musculoskeletal injuries
- Proven experience leading and working within multidisciplinary clinical teams
Desirable Criteria
- Fellowship of the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine (FFSEM)
- Proficiency in musculoskeletal ultrasound for both diagnostic imaging and therapeutic intervention
- Prior experience within professional football
- Fluency in one or more additional European languages
